Am I still eligible for the GI Bill?

If I didn’t include the GI Bill as part of my first enlistment am I still eligible for it otherwise? I have yet to deploy and my first enlistment was only for three years which I have completed already with the National Guard. - Kapryna T

The starting point for this discussion is to realize that there are at least four different GI Bills for you to study to determine if you are eligible for one or more of these programs.  They are:

  • The Post 911 GI Bill (Chapter 33)
  • The Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty (Chapter 30)
  • The Montgomery GI Bill - Reserve Components (Chapter 1606) and,
  • The Reserve Educational Assistance Program (Chapter 1607).

To start your study go to  The benefits and eligibility for all four of the above programs are laid out in this chart.  You may find that the program you are closest to eligible for is the  Montgomery GI Bill - Reserve Components.  However, once you have educated yourself on all of the programs the next step would be to discuss your eligibility with your NCO Support Channel.  This would include your Team Leader, Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant and First Sergeant. They, in conjunction with your Admin NCO, can steer you in the right direction.

If you are already in college you have another invaluable resource.  That would be your School Certifying Official.  They can also assist you in determining which if any GI Bill you are eligible to use for your education.
