A friend told me that if I transfer my Post 911 GI Bill benefits to my daughter and she uses it them while I am on active duty she qualifies for in-state tuition in any state where she attends college.  True or False? - Mike

This is a true statement.  The rate of payment will limited to in-state tuition for the highest priced undergraduate public Institution of Higher Learning (IHL).

There are a couple of key things to be aware of as you head down this road.

  • You can transfer up to 36 months of this educational benefit to a dependent after you have served 6 years and reenlisted for at least 4 more years.
  • You can transfer the total amount of your benefits after you have completed 10 years of service.

There are also some other key elements that are outlined in other responses written on this blog sight.  It could be worth your time to look at www.gruntsmilitary.com/education-benefits/blog/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&post=523 or www.gruntsmilitary.com/education-benefits/blog/wp-admin/post.php?action=edit&post=499.

For official Veteran Affairs information you can go to www.gibill.va.gov. You will find comparison charts for the various GI Bills, benefit calculators,  locators for regional and state Veteran Affairs offices, ways to check out which post secondary schools are participating in the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon program and information on military scholarships.
