Default Social Groups

Just a suggestion but I think that joining and creating social groups should somehow be made more noticeable. It's a great way to find people that share your goals and interests. Some people might not see the tiny link for joining social groups and I bet a good many people don't know they exist. Just my 2 cents.

Vbulletin, the platform that this forum is running on, is not particularly social group friendly. There is talk about future social group updates in v4.0, but I don't think that will be coming too soon. At the moment it is what it is. Recommendation from me would be to place links in your signature stating what groups you are apart of. Also bookmark groups for quick access. I may start doing the former of the two now that I think of it.

I'm not too much familiar with the "behind the scenes" stuff for the forum software, but I don't think it's something that can be changed around by the moderators like you're asking. A ton of different forums utilize this same software, and it's the same format, all over. Only the basic stuff can be changed around; not the location and position of various forum features.

On the toolbar under Quick Links is a link for the Social Groups. I'm not familiar with vBulletin, nor do I have a server and the money to get a license to run the software to try it out myself, but I'm pretty sure that some custom coding (beyond what is already done to give Grunts it's feel) would have to be done to link the Social Groups elsewhere. Given it already has a link in an easy to find location (where I just pointed out), I'd say it's not worth the time. Then again, I'm not the man that makes that call.

How do you make it so that it shows the link as the name of the group instead of the actual URL?

When you click on the insert link button the follow code will come up. You'll have to manually input the name you want. I removed the first "[" in the front tag so it would not show up as "name". Be sure that you have the beginning and end tags correct.

Code:
URL="actual url"]name[/url]
Example -
Code:
URL="http://www.gruntsmilitary.com/board/group.php?groupid=12"]Sports Fanatics[/url]
Seen as:
Sports Fanatics

I'm not sure if it is possible on vBulletin but one option is to make a forum with a redirect link to the social groups. For example make a sub forum under the "General Forum" that is titled "Social Groups" and have it redirect the user to the Social groups, using the URL from the quick links. This would give the social groups more visibility but also give the user a choice. I'm unsure of how much memory or space it might take up. However it should not take up much memory or space as no one is actually "posting" in the forum. Once again I'm not sure if this is even possible with vBulletin.

You know, that would actually be a good idea. Thanks for the help, by the way.
