Rare Snowfall Hits New Orleans, Parts of Mississippi

NEW ORLEANS — A rare snowfall blanketed south Louisiana and parts of Mississippi Thursday, closing schools, government offices and bridges, triggering crashes on major highways and leaving thousands of people without power.

Up to 8 inches of snow was reported in parts of Louisiana. Snow also covered a broad swath of Mississippi, including the Jackson area, and closed schools in more than a dozen districts.

A heavy band of snow coated windshields and grassy areas in New Orleans, where about 1 inch accumulated. Office workers stepped out of high-rises to catch a snowflake, snap pictures with cell-phone cameras and swap snow stories.

New Orleans' last snowfall, in 2004, was a dusting. The National Weather Service said the previous earliest date for measurable snowfall in New Orleans was Dec. 22, 1989.

In Louisiana, roughly 10,000 power outages were reported by Cleco Corp., one of the state's largest power providers. The company said it expected most of the outages to be restored by nightfall.

Some Thursday morning flights at Louis Armstrong International Airport outside New Orleans were delayed and canceled, but the airport said flights were back to normal by the afternoon.

In southeast Louisiana, temperatures were above freezing so accumulations were not expected to linger much beyond Thursday.
As most of you know, until recently I lived near New Orleans, so I was surprised this morning to get a call from our old neighbor telling me that they had 8 inches of snow on the ground north of the lake, and considering that it was back in '04 that New Orleans got a nice dusting right before Christmas, so I did a bit of digging, and what do you know, today was only the 16th time since 1851 that there has been measurable snow accumulation in New Orleans. Prior snowfalls were in 1851, 1867, 1881, and 1895 according to THIS February 15, 1895 article from the New York Times. Other snowfalls were in 1899, 1935, 1954, 1963, 1989, 1995, and 2004.

Anyway, it got me to thinking about this whole "Anthropogenic CO2 induced Global Warming" thing again. Also as most of you know, I've consistently stated that I think the whole "AGW" thing is pure non-sense, and nothing but scare mongering by leftists in order to justify the imposition of their Socialist agenda on the entire world, but to quote Dennis Miller, "that's just my opinion, I could be wrong", so what do you think? Is "AGW" a reality, or is it what I believe it to be, just clap-trap dreamed up to impose a Socialist agenda on the entire world?

All I know is that I hope it doesn't melt to quickly, because I don't think we can handle rebuilding that city twice in a decade...

Is "AGW" a reality...?
I used to think it was a crock - especially when a little research turned up the same names jumping on the 'global warming' bandwagon that had, just short years before, been decrying the global cooling of the coming ice age. Given the vast quantities of hot air spewn by Algore and his international cohorts of mindless but vocal disciples, there may well be isolated areas of the world that are, indeed, engulfed in balmy clouds of heated, human-generated 'swamp gas'.

Pure hogwash! We're simply due for a volcanic eruption. Every time the temps have heated up and then fell, to what some would say are normal or comfortable, there was a volcanic eruption in the mix. Those ashes stay in the atmosphere for several years before they're burned up completely and the shade is gone. It's happened time and time again...nature takes care of itself if we'd just leave it alone. If it were such a big deal don't ya think Mr Gore would've made some environmental changes within his own home and the scientists involved in his flick wouldn't be suing those who put the flick together?

There ain't nothin' wrong with a li'l snow, short lived fun in those parts. Oh and 1" of rain is equivalent to 10" of snow...those folks down there should be able to handle less than an inch of rain through 8" of meltin' snow! Heck, we can get that in one day but day after day, after day....woohoo 4WD!
