Default Web-designers, web-savvy people, come on in!

I wanted to get an idea of how many Cadets out there are interested in, have knowledge of or actually partake in web-design, website management or anything of the sort.

I'm not the sharpest with computer coding (HTML, PHP, etc.), but I am currently my squadron's webmaster. I've got the entire site developed, and am just waiting for the final word from wing headquarters in regards to our motto / squadron emblem. Once that's OK'd, I'll be able to start the website.

How long have you been involved in this area of computers? Any hints / tips for those designing websites?

What're your thoughts?

Stay savvy on your skills once you get sharp in them, and keep them current. I started doing web design in 2001 (when all this CSS, XML, Flash, and other 'new' stuff weren't standard) and I found HTML pages easy to maintain. Unfortunate for me, I fell behind the times and I'm just now trying to teach myself how to design with CSS. Part of what I'm going to do with my college courses is take a course or two in web design to get myself back up with the times.

That's what I'm hoping to do. I've pretty much got my education (at least, my hopeful education) plan planned out, from the schools to the majors, undergrad to grad (I'm hoping to shoot for my Masters).

One of the schools I'm looking at in New York City (where this will all take place) is a "public service" university, and has a B.A. in Fire and Emergency Service. There's a bit of computer coursework in that (mainly in the emergency management field), but that's not why I chose that as my hopeful undergrad degree. (PM me if you're curious about that major; I'm not even there yet, but have been questioned on it many times, especially by CAP ES types).

My computer education comes if and when I go for my Masters. All of the schools I've got listed have B.S.'s in either Information Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Technology Studies, etc.

When I'm in and done with college, I'll be serving as a volunteer firefighter in the town I'll be living in, as well as a Port Authority cop after college, so I know the B.A. in Fire / Emergency Service will come in handy. When I retire from that line of work, I'll have the computer-related degree to help me out.

(Some call me nerdy, I call it being prepared. Besides, I'm heavily interested in and excited for my future.)

You've got a very good plan, much better than what I had at your age. Good luck!!
