Default Military History Thread

Well, in the light of the new "Are Politics Fair Game?" thread, I've decided to create a Military History thread in the Cadet Forum.

Speakin' of History, I found out something today.

During World War II, when German SS members would dress up as American Soldiers and sabatoge supply and communications lines in WWII, they put African-American soldiers as guards and told them to "shoot any white soldier that acts suspicious".

That is pretty ironic and kinda funnny. I can just see them now, shoot the whiteys:sigh: If only I was alive in the time of World War 2.

Oh good idea! Thank you Buffalosoldier.

To contribute to the topic, I was looking around at the US Army units and when they were created and ran across this: http://www.history.army.mil/faq/branches.htm. If you are interested in Army unit history, this is a great place to start because it gives you the dates and years of when these units started. I thought it was interesting to learn about what was created after what and things like that.

I'm particularly interested in the Korean War, and Six days War (Arab/Israeli Conflict). My Grandfather was in the Korean war, and i just love to hear him tell me stories about it when he was alive.

I wish I had been interested in the military before my great-uncle died. He died about a year before I decided I wanted to be Marine. In WWII he served in the Army, but was never deployed. (Enlisted illegally) After WWII he tranfered to the Navy, and then something like a year before the Korean War he transferred to the Marine Corps. He was recon in Korea and from the stories I heard at his funeral he did some very dark things in that position. He would sneak into the enemies camps at night in one of thier uniforms and kill their commanding officer and leave them in chaos. He was very traumatized and without a doubt suffered from PTSD. He recieved three Purple Hearts, one of which hangs on the wall of my house with a picture of him and the certifcate from when he recieved it.

Woah... that's some deep stuff...

I had two great uncles in World War II... no idea what they did, all the military records for my mom's side of the family are contained in the house of one of my deceased great-aunts.

Wow! my grandpa, "papa", was a tank mechanic, and served in the battle when Seoul was retaken the second time. He only made it to Specialist and was awarded no awards, he was busted, when before he resigned from the Army for telling his Company Commander to *#$k off. lol.
