Default First Duty Station

Hey all,

I have a little situation that some input could be of great use and also greatly appreciated.
I'm currently at the Security Forces Academy and I just received news of my first duty station: Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota with the 91st SFG.
I have no problems with the assignment. PRP will be a nice thing to have in my background and another past experience from which I can draw. However, I do want to deploy. I've heard various mixed things here in Lackland about deploying from a PRP base, and Google failed me quite epicly. So here's my question: how likely am I to deploy from Minot and how likely am I to deploy if I volunteer for deployment from Minot? I have been offered a trade from another Airman who got Ramstein in Germany, which is what brings this matter to a head.

Any comments or input is appreciated, including if my head is in the right place on this decision. I bow to the experience of our veterans.

Thanks,

AP

More than likely you will not deploy until such time as you are a proven Airmen with your training done and shots up to date. You have MUCH training yet to do before you can be considered deployable. Might be 3 months, might be a year. Depends on so much. Being in Ramstein won't change many things either, you are still deployable out of that base also.

Careful, it will come soon enough. War isn't all its cracked up to be. Be glad you're going some where to get your final training and learn the ropes first. Going to war wet behind the ears can't be much fun for you. Be happy you get the chance to be prepared first. If you plan on 20yrs, I be you will have plenty of chances to deploy.

Whether you deploy out of Minot or not, being from Fargo, ND originally, I've seen Minot numerous times. It's a good base. The largest complaint I've heard from airmen is that "it's too cold" in the winter. This is obviously something that no one can control so consider yourself warned . But seriously it is a nice base and I'm sure you'll like it there.

Respectfully,

Cyclone

"Happiness is: Minot in your rear view." (T-shirt worn by a SAC SP that was stationed there in the 80's)

While I was never stationed there, I did travel there on a technical assist and spent a week there. If you like wide open country, you will like it. I have heard that there is some good fishing in the area.

Take the trade. At least if you dont deploy at Ramstein, you still get to see the world. Minot is dead center of Nothingville, America. All that aside, many cops deploy from Ramstein. The Air Force has never been as keen on quality as much as they are on numbers. They will deploy your newb butt right after FTAC just to fill a quota.

Also, German broads are friggin hot and the beer is hella good!!

Well, I'm going to be going to Minot when I get out of Tech School.
I'm finding several good things to focus on; one of the foremost, is as Billyd mentioned, the fishing! I hear the hunting isn't that shabby up there either.
Thanks for everyone's input. I can only hope (and work my tail end off to make sure) this will be a prosperous start to a prosperous career!
