Holy $hit balls!! That's my Chief Of the Boat! I won't post his name or what boat this was taken on, even though I'm sure it can be found other places, but that's my COB when he was on his first COB tour. SSGN's are such a "high profile" platform that our CO's and COB's are all second tour guys...this video was taken on his first tour as a COB.
SSBN's are at sea for so long that 1/2 way through the patrol we have what's called "Half-Way Night." It's meant to be a moral booster to the crew, and to take a few hours break, and remember that "Hell, fellas, it's 1/2 over!!" This video was taken during a 1/2 way nite ceremony. The Recreation Committee takes bids on the officers seats in the wardroom, corn on the COB, pie in the eye, and others (you'll have to make an SSBN deterrent patrol to find out), and the cash benefits the crew. We'll have a BBQ with the proceeds when we get back to port. Notice the beards? Damn, I love submarines!! We are an entirely different entity than you've ever seen before. People wonder why I have a screwed up sense of humor, and I am very "sarcastic"? This is only a meager glimpse into the life that I live..... Good find...I didn't know this video existed! Wow, crazy Navy guys. We had a crew chief leaving our base this past drill weekend and he was drenched with relish, 50 year old maple syrup, and ice cold water; good times to be had by all.

I have a ton of respect for any man who can pull Submarine duty...if for no other reason than my claustrophobia. There is no way in hell I could ever do more than a day or two under water, and only then if we didn't get more than 25 feet deep.
I will say this though, my standing joke in my motor pool is that one day I will get my Underwater Mechanics Badge, because that's as deep as I will ever get...only as deep as a wheeled vehicle at Mire Depth 3.

Ping, have you ever had anyone flip out on a boat during a deployment? Curl up in a ball or something? I know you sub guys go through some psychological testing, but I'm sure that doesn't weed everyone out...

I've seen it twice: Once was pretty bad. He didn't show up to watch, so we searched the entire boat (nowhere he could really go, so we knew he was still onboard). We found him a couple hours later curled up in a ball crying that "the indians are coming." Doc doped him up on "something good", and propped him up on the crew's mess. We kept a watch on him till we could BSP him off. The second guy kept it together enough till we hit port, and then he took off. Basic deserter type.
