I was once upon a time a Cadet in the United States Army Cadet Corps. This was with the American Cadet Alliance. I was a Cadet Private First Class upon graduation of annual training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina in 2006.

I must say that my experience with this Cadet Corps was like none other. My reason for wanting to join this: I wanted to prepare myself mentally and emotionally for what I'd be going through when I was to go through Basic and Advanced Training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO the following year.

In 2005, I attended Norwich University's Future Leadership Camp, which was an amazing experience for me in itself. I attended this as a first insight as to what the Military Life was like, and it certainly provided me with this experience. I knew in 2006, that I wanted to attend a Cadet Program, and when I googled "Military Leadership Summer Camps" and came across the ACA, I knew this program was for me.

Annual Training consisted of essentially two weeks of hell. I arrived June 27th 2006 at Fort Bragg, NC and was immediately re-introduced to what the Military was like. The first week was spent reviewing rank structure for all branches of service, how to properly wear uniforms, D+C, PT and other various Military Classes. I remember how it felt to be part of a "Recruit" unit that had no clue what the Military was like, and remember how intimidating it was. I remember thinking that this would prepare me for my life in the Military, and kept telling myself that this was what I wanted. I was 16 years old during that summer, and that summer was probably the best summer of my life, because in September 2006, when I turned 17, I enlisted in the Army National Guard as a 31 Bravo, Military Police Officer.

I'm currently out, because of an honorable medical discharge, but that's a completely different story I'd rather not get into.

Thanks for the info. I'm still not sure if I want to get involved with the program. Being a Cadet meant a lot to me when I was younger and it kept me on a good path but still......

Being an officer in the USAC is a very rewarding challenge from what I've heard. They put you through O.C.S. for this position during annual training, and from what I saw in 2006, it was very much worth it.

Why is that all the military adventure camps' costs (including the one for the USAC) are through the roof...come on, $2000...WTF? It seems like a really interesting thing, but the price turned me off from this and other such camps like Norwich's Future Leaders Camp.How can you even afford to go to these things.

You know, you could always join CAP and go to one of their encampments

In fact, the New Hampshire Summer Encampment is held at Norwich University and uses the same facilities, etc. Our cost is $250.00.

I've never seen a CAP encampment over $300.00 and our National Activities range from free* to ~$1,000.
