I am going in to boot as PFC ,and I want to know what I have to do in bootcamp to get LCPL? If I get it, I will have some extra money to fly my family out to watch my graduate which would be great considering I have not seen them in three or four years.

Hey, sorry I can't help you out with what you are asking, but I can help you out with one thing: making sure you know that spelling, grammar, and proper use of the English language is used here. The moderators and admins are very strict about this, and I figured you could here it from a fellow user first. Just make sure you are capitalizing what needs to be, and check your spelling as you type.

You won't see any money until after you graduate. You will have no need for cash (you will get "chits" to purchase soap, haircuts, etc). Money will be taken out of your monthly paychecks for uniforms. You will not be able to send money home while you are in Boot Camp. You will not have your checkbook or ATM card available to you.

Again, you will not see any pocket money until after you graduate.

If you are allowed to have your paycheck direct deposited into your personal bank account, you may be able to let your parents have access to that account and they can withdraw the cash. I would not advise it.

On another note: Only the top 10% of the platoon can be meritoriously promoted to the next higher rank. They do not have to recommend or promote anybody if they decide that no one warrants the promotion.

As a general rule of thumb, squad leaders and platoon guide are at the top of the list for promotion. However, the "scribe" or "house mouse" will be considered within that pool. Another thing, the PFT, rifle scores, academic scores, and other factors of being a Marine are an essential part of being considered for meritorious promotion.

Lastly, if you do get promoted to the next higher grade, the effective date of promotion will be on the 2nd day of the month that you graduate in. You will see no significant amount of extra cash for that short period of time. The pay difference from PFC to LCpl is about 80 bucks a month. Then take out all the taxes, etc. You may not even see the bump in pay until your first paycheck AFTER Boot Camp.

I would not think that any bump in pay will help significantly with plane tickets anyway. Be worried about whether or not you will make it through Boot Camp.


Lastly, go back and edit your post, correct your grammar, and capitalize where you should be. Really bad form and speaks poorly to who/what my Corps has in the ranks of future Marines.

As a future Devil Dog, you need show that you are the best in everything that you do. This includes the way you communicate with others here.

As far as the whole E3 thing, I think that you can still sign up for the 6 year enlistment to graduate a Lance Corporal. I THINK that you still only get paid as an E1 while you are in bootcamp. The good news is that you will not have to drive your family too far(your profile says you are from San Diego... right?).

By the way it sounds in your post, it seems like it might be too late for you to take that option(but it never hurts to ask!). As stated earlier, you can always go for a meritorious promotion for being the honor graduate. I graduated MCRD San Diego on 02Nov1990. You will never forget your new birthday either!

Thanks guys, for all the information on everything. I am studying and working out, I guess I'll try to practice some drills to. Well that kinda puts a damper on things if I can't send out any money for the graduation. It will be OK, I will just fly out there when I get my ten days leave, if I can. I'm a fellow recruit for the Marine Corps, and my advice to you is to work more on exceeding the requirements physically for basic as opposed to working on marching and drill.

This is what my recruiter told me because you will learn drill there, but it will be alot more work to improve physically there.

Have you ever heard of the Marine Graduation Foundation? It is a non-profit organization who's goal it is to ensure that "No Marine Stands Alone" on their graduation day. They offer assistance to help pay for travel.
