Fron Grunts front page, and I quote: "Confederate Troops under MG John Chivington defeated a force of Union volunteers at Apache Canyon, New Mexico, Territory."
Where did that come from? John Chivington was a Union Major at that battle! The Confederate Commander at the battle site was Col. "Dirty Shirt" Scurry while overall Confederate Command during the Battle was under Col. Tom Green. The overall Confederate expedition commander being B/Gen Henry H. Sibley.
Chivington was resposible for the ultimate defeat of the Texans at what is now known as the Battle of Glorieta Pass, when he led a round about attack on the Confederate rear and destroyed their supply train. Even tho the Texans held the battlefield after the fight, they were forced to retreat down the Rio Grande valley back to Texas due to not being able to replace the destroyed supplies. (Note: all Confederate troops in this campaign were Texans.)

A sad day for Texas. It did prove two military fundementals:

Just because you win the battle, doesn't mean you won the battle.

If you don't protact your rear, someone will come up and kick it.

Just another case of the "victor" writing the history to suit himself.

Or perhaps merely an example of the half-@$$ed 'research' considered adequate by the degree mills handing out diplomas to people who can't even read them, the only 'requirement' for graduation being a discernable pulse for however many years it takes to occasionally show up for a specified number of classes.
