We're fortunate out here. The Big Spring VA Center does the best of any hospital that I've been to. They work in conjunction with the VA's in El Paso, Amarillo and Albuquerque. The claims I had were processed quickly (3 months) and with little problems. They also didn't have a problem with sending me outside the system for my hearing aids.
I've heard horror stories, though from the centers located in the big cities.

Edited to add: It makes you wish all VA Centers operated this way. God knows our vets deserve good service.

Guess my problem was all overseas(europe) vet's claims are sent into one area, I think it was Pittsburg, which is a big area in itself. I ended up sending in 3 marriage certificates, 2 bank account forms, and 1 extra birth certificate. All the info was sent in with the original claim.

SGM,
When you mention the VA system at Pittsburgh it makes me want to go and hide in the nearest swamp. Needing a bit of help due to the inconvenience I picked up in Vietnam, they got right on it, five years and still waiting... Easy Brother, Reddog...

The biggest fight the VA in Big Spring has had in years was a proposal to move it to Midland. It was going to be done as a political move only. They thought that they could get more money ear-marked to them if they moved it to the Bush's hometown. Fortunately that's been tabled.

The best thing that happened to me was my cousin, Jene Benton. Her husband was a POW during WWII. She got involved in helping many POWs in getting their claim done. When I filed mine, I would write it up, send her a copy, she would read it, suggest corrections, I would correct resubmit, and drive on. The claim itself got processed the first time. It was submitting multipul copies of documents which pissed me off. If it hadn't been for Jene and her help, I would have had a more difficult time. Can't thank her enough!!

Not only is the VA screwing vets, they are screwing them in the rear.

I've had horrible experiences with the VA. When trying to get my medical records (which took a YEAR, btw) I had the feeling there was no accountability in their office. The person I would talk to would say my request was in the system, two months later the next person said there was no request from me and all of them refused to let me talk to anyone higher than them.
