Try a Google search of "history of Army rank". There are websites out there that can help you out.

Army Specialist grades used to be from E-4 thru E-9. However, E-8 & E-9 were rarely if ever used (depends on who you talk to). Gradually it's evolved down to just E-4 having a Specialist rank. The whole idea of specialist ranks was to have a career progression for people who were not taking up the NCO slots authorized by congress. It's all too complicated to cover here on this forum.
The U.S. Army has struggled with this for over a century. How to have line NCO's and how to incorporate a system of ranks to cover those people in special duties. It got so bad once, that by 1920, there were 120 rank insignia for Army enlisted men (sorry, no women allowed then). To top that off, congress set the rate of pay for each rank! Yep, things are much simpler now! |

It's amazing how the US Military has progressed over the years as far as structure goes. I've always been fascinated by it.
![]() But as far as to answer your question, specialist ranks went from E4 to E9. Lee gave a great description on how it worked.
