Not a gunner, but trained with the tactical trainer and observed a few live fires. The most innovative thing about the javelin is not the warhead (although it kills just about anything out there), but the fact that it has an incredible range, is fire and forget, and has a 'soft launch', that minimizes the signature. This combines to greatly increase the survivability of the gunner, who can 'shoot and scoot'. The tracker is handy as a thermal scope on top of that.

It hits what it is aimed at and kills what it hits, and the gunner is already long gone when it is detected. This is a vast improvement over the Dragon, which shot up a huge plume of dust when it launched, had a range of about 1000 meters, was SACLOS (the gunner had to 'fly' the missile all the way to the target), super slow, and was not effective against any modern tanks. To add insult to injury it was heavy as hell.

I can't wait for the day they figure out a way to replace the TOWs on the Bradley with Javelins. Wire guided just isn't that great to work with when you have a fire and forget system.

The next generation will be even beyond the Javelin.

Do a search for the FCS BCTs and see what the concept envisions.

*** An awesome weapon system unless you have to carry it very far .Only problem the British army has with it its a bit expensive and is it really necessary to use one one to kill a bloke on a motorcycle or hiding behind a wall ?Since Terry taliban doesn't have any tanks its used as a precision support weapon .Troops on ground love it bean counters not that happy . The thermal* sight is an outstanding survillance* device on its own .

I remember when I was ask if I wanted to become a TOW gunner - my response was no, I wanted a little longer life expectance after shooting!! Now if I was ask to be a Javalin gunner - yes - no wires, shoot and move. Great!!
