Read it and see how far your jaw drops. If these had been US Marine's they would have been awarded the Navy Cross or a MOH. Oh my goodness the pilots even got Distingushied Flying Cross and a Army officer even got a military cross.

Unless I'm completely missing something here, that article doesn't say anything about medals.

Yep, I have to agree. I don't have the slightest idea what you're talking about. Seems to be a "friendly fire" story that highlights some operational training weaknesses.
There isn't a single mention of awards, denied awards, inappropriate awards, medals, honors, recognition, etc in the entire article.

Oh, this happened a while ago.
Pretty much, some Royal Marines got ambushed in Afghanistan, and after they ran, they went back in, strapped to the little stub wings on an Apache to go and get the body back of their fallen comrade. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6qHcd4imKk -- Video of the event.

Awards or not, those RM's are super real for strapping onto an Apache and flying in to recover a fellow Marine. Good stuff!

All an individual decoration does is recognize you for an act or period based on someone else's opinion, minus the Purple Heart, which is the only decoration you are entitled to and not recommended for. Regardless of whether or not they'll have another 80 cent ribbon or one dollar attachment to add to their rack, they know what they did and should be proud of it. Likewise, I'm sure there are plenty of individuals here on the forum that have done things they are proud of that they don't have a medal to accompany the story for.

This is the type of operation that a commander may turn a blind eye toward, but there is no justification for submitting a recommendation for an award.
As a commander, you certainly wish to maintain a high level of morale, but you can never justify the risk vs reward for this type of action. There is no way to justify the loss of a helicopter and possibly more casualties for the recovery of a body.

Had it been US Marines, they would not have received the Navy Cross or the MOH for attempting to recover the body of a fallen brother. They wouldn't have been awarded those medals even if they were attempting to rescue troops that were still alive and fighting for their lives. Case in point - Operation Red Wing: none of the 16 troops on board the CH-47 Chinook that was shot down by an RPG while attempting to rescue 4 SEALs involved in a firefight were awarded the Navy Cross, Air Force Cross or MOH.

Its up to commanders to write up recommendation for medals. Then it goes
through various hoops.Guess the operation as a whole being a failure no one wanting to bat for awards . Risking lives for a body is never worth it ,but,They had a heat source so guess they thought he was wounded . Or it just could be Royal way of proving we are so hard .That wasn't heroic it was just a morning .
