VelcroŽ is the trademarked name of one brand of cloth 'hook and loop' fastener, and - much like duct tape and firearms - there is no requirement for a 'need'. Besides, how will one know what it's capable of replacing if one doesn't have an adequate amount to experiment with?

Clothing and outdoors gear manufacturers come to mind. That stuff is used on all sorts of products from shoes to suitcases. In the military alone it's been used on field jackets, flight jackets, flying helmets and on and on. You can buy the stuff in sewing stores and craft stores. It's everywhere.
The guy that invented it lives less than 100 miles from me in a VERY small Texas town.

This has always been one of my favorite bits of military terminology: Hook and pile tape fastener instead of Velcro.

Others include: Tape, adhesive fabric, pressure sensitive, olive drab in color

and...

Slide fastener

What ? Least my army never tried that idiocy Supposedly our new Uniform
and gear is going to come with the brand logos on to get soldiers to beleive its actually good .So they don't go out and spend cash on alternatives .
Tape adhesive fabric pressure senstive olive drab in colour. We know that as
sniper tape . As they tend to cover anything they can in it .
What did we do before velcro?

No such thing as para cord. You must be referring to Type III nylon, olive in color.

Someone in the pentagon has too little work to do :D.Wish they would stop
it as its catching. I used to have a rifle now I have a weapon system !
If I wanted to use big words I would not have joined the infantry.

Doesn't the military tender out these purchases? If they do then they should not be using brand names.

It is hard to know if the site quoted is selling officially sanctioned chinese Velcro or fake "Velcro". Many companies have taken to selling the cheap copies of their products as the real thing.

P.S. There used to be a series of training films featuring Red Green where he demonstrates the many uses of adhesive fabric tape. These are must see films for support personnel.

Items like 100MPH tap, chem lights, rolls of velcro, etc., are usually purchased in bulk at the installation level and available at a self-service supply store. Usually this type item is made by a variety of vendors that meet the military specs-lighthouse for the blind, etc.

However, each unit has a credit card that can be used for certain purchases at any store, limited by price, quantity, and type item. It is charged to the unit's budget, and is used for unusual items that the commander deems necessary.
