Well I just got a date to the Cadet Ball and I can't wait. I love the Cadet Ball and it is probably the second best thing about being a cadet. Please feel free to post any Wacky, crazy or just plain out funny stories about the Cadet Ball's you've attended.

I went to two cadet balls as a Sea Cadet. One of those times I was awarded a medal for being selected as my unit's Cadet of the Year. I'll definately remember that night because of how honored I was to be selected for the medal.

It was my Sophomore year (my second military ball) and I had no date so I pulled a usual me and started taking other people's dates. I found this one girl, beautiful little thing, and started flirting up a storm with her, it was great, we danced and I went to go brag to my friend. As I started describing this girl to him, he just nodded and smiled and goes, "Black and white dress, blue eyes, brown hair?" I told him yeah, thinking he must've seen me. And he throws a curveball, "Oh you mean my girlfriend?" and I just kind of stood there, dumbfounded...I just looked at him laughing his head off, and I had nothing to say. It was embarrassing, he still gives me a hard time for that one.

Nice planning, right?

Ours is like a week before Valentines, and this just reminded me that I must now get a viable date...

Are you cadets allowed to wear a Mess Dress uniform to your balls or do you just go with Full or Service Dress?

We just do Service Dress. Cadets are not issued Mess Dress.

Are you kidding? We do it cheap...Service Dress. Our's is on Valenyine's Day this year too, except I dropped JROTC today...I still get to go, just not in uniform.

Why did you drop JROTC? The date hasn't been set yet for my Counties Ball.

I was just wondering. Some Sea Cadet officers are able to wear Mess Dress, but most don't have them unless they've set aside money or their unit offsets the cost.

Why is it for the County? Don't you have one just for your unit.

My old unit did a county ball. It was one of those rare times that brought cadets from all the schools together in a non-competitive environment.

The SAI and I have some personal issues, let's leave it at that.

I can respect that Bozz. It is good to have every school in my County come together for one-night. I have met some real good friends at the Cadet Ball. I know for a fact that three people from the Kroger I work at are coming this year from there Unit's.

That is great. :D Last year we had a dance contest, of course the twins dance with each other (guys) and win. I swear except for me and a small group of guys, you would think everyone was a professional dancer, I only got up for the electric slide! We also have awards, not official awards. These awards are like, "Most likely to get shot out of the freshmen... Smith!" or something like that. That was fun. I totally freaked out when they announced prettiest eyes. When they said it I got up from the table and I was like, "That A hole is wearing contacts!"

At my unit's cadet ball, we have a prince and princess for the underclassmen and a king and queen for the seniors. I only get up for the Electric Slide, Cha Cha Slide, and White and Nerdy.

Mess Dress is appropriate (I speak for AFJROTC, no other service), under one condition: The AF is not paying for that uniform. The cadet pays for the uniform out of his/her pocket. If the unit pays for a cadets uniform, it becomes a standard issue for any cadet, and because the uniform is so expensive, I have never heard of a situation such as this occurring. But, like most AF wear, cadets are allowed to wear them. But of course, there is one more boundary the unit must cross: The unit has to gain direct approval from AFJROTCHQ for the uniform (the process is long but strait forward, and requests are usually never declined).

Otherwise, Mess Dress is a "no go." In fact, my instructors (and many others as I have heard) do not wear the Mess Dress even if they were to have them. They opt for the Full Service, maybe for uniformity amongst each other and the cadets, maybe because they don't have Mess Dress. It doesn't really matter though...

Does anyone else have the grog bowl tradition at their cadet ball? My SASI always includes the grog bowl at the cadet ball and cadet dinning inn. It is kind of funny, my SASI would call someone up to drink the grog for anything.

We usually have the grog at Dining In only. The cadet ball is just that, a ball. Like a mini-prom of sorts I suppose. At least for us that is what it is.

Heh... my Military Ball is in April... and the S-4 wants to ruin it because he thinks that the guy's singin' to the ladies is "gay".

We have a Grog Bowl ceremony... it was hilarious to say the least. :D

Well I'll talk a little about both my Sea Cadet and AFJROTC Military Balls.

With the NSCC ones, we'd normally be in Whites but for 2 of them (last year's and this year's) they were in Blues. My last one as a cadet, I got to wear my Chief's Dress Blues. The one this year which was on the 20th, was the day after I got back home on leave so I went to that one in uniform. I used to have pictures from them but I think they're in storage.

My AFJROTC ones were on base and we'd go in Service Dress. Dinner, a couple awards, then dance the night away after we'd do saber line. I remember junior year dragging a friend of mine with me down to the control tower on base so we could watch the F-16s come in. Kinda weirded the controllers out because they were used to seeing me in my Sea Cadet uniforms. Last year (Senior Year) was the best one because I finally got to walk the saber line with a friend of mine who's a former Sea Cadet so it was very nice.

Sweet sounds awesome, I wish I could go to the Ball in Marine Dress Blues but my County will not let you attend after you graduate, you can Chaperone though. I might change my mind later on.

I had so much fun at mine! Freshman year I went stag though, lol but the rest of the years I had a date! It was alot of fun! Especially by my 3rd when I finally had the rank I needed to upgrade from the salt and peppers to the service dress uniform! Lot's of great memories from the military ball :)

This last ball some dummies got all of the fancy champagne/grape juice bottles and made a pyramid out of them... later it all fell and they stayed till 2 in the morning.

My unit is having ours this Friday evening, from 1800 to 2359 hours. Although we're not having a grog bowl this year (:() it looks like it's going to be really fun. Normally we have it at the local Elk's Lodge, which is pretty ratty looking, but now we've raised enough money to have it at a nice, fancy restaurant, so it's all good. To make things even better, I'll (hopefully) have my driver's license by Wednesday, so I can drive myself out there:D

One little funny story I do have though. Last year, one cadet who is infamous for being quite a character, was found to have an empty water glass (which was deemed unacceptable and clearly prohibited by the rules set out in advance.) So, the head table quieted the room, and confronted said cadet. His explanation for the empty glass of water turned into an incoherent rambling about how the heat of the candle in the centerpiece of his table caused his water to evaporate...needless to say the whole corps got a kick out of it, and that cadet is still reminded (almost daily, might I add) of that day. Good times...
