I am sorry for posting this if it seems kind of stupid, but what are DCU's and why don't I ever see any schools wearing them?

DCUs, or more appropriately, the Desert Combat Uniform, is basically the desert camouflaged version of the BDU. That's all it is. Same layout, but in desert colors.

Why do no units use them? Beats me, but it probably is because that we don't need a desert oriented uniform... we aren't fighting, we aren't trying to hide.

The man wearing DCUs is in the middle: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:ACU-BDU-WWII_uniform.jpg

Desert Camouflage Uniform. They were issued to service-members deploying to the Middle East, but with the advent of all these new multi-purpose uniforms, they are being fazed out. This is me in DCU's back in 2006.

DCU: Desert Camouflage Uniforms, these have not been used for quite some time and the last time I had seen them being used was in 2006, when the Army was in the beginning stages of phasing from Woodlands (BDU's) to ACU's. I'm attaching a photo of my Sergeant, and myself as well as two other friends who enlisted with me. He is in DCU's, we are in BDU's.

Staff Sergeant Salmoa, Private Brittany Leblanc, Private First Class Shaw, and Myself. at the time we were all PV-1's except for the Sergeant.

They were still in use as recently as last year when my unit deployed to the AOR. The Air Guard won't be seeing the ABU as a whole for quite some time, so when we deployed in 2007 people still went with their DCUs.

I think I am the only AJROTC cadet who wears them. I have permission from my SAI and AI to wear them in my unit and only with my unit. I can't wear them to Comps or anything like that. I can wear them anyway I want to becasue the Army has phased them out and I am in a Army Cadet program.

To be completely honest, there is no way you should be allowed to wear them.

First of all, the fact that they are phased-out.

Secondly, our troops wore them while deployed, not at home station.

You won't see em in the theaters of operation anymore either. When I left Afghanistan earlier this year all the folks coming in had ACU or ABU uniforms. The rapid deployment of uniforms goes to those personnel deploying to the combat theaters, which also happen to be where the DCUs were being worn.

Edited to add: I was in a Guard mindset, the Navy still uses DCUs. They are in production of a new uniform but it hasn't fielded yet to my knowledge.

Yeah so 2007 saw the end of the DCUs then. I know our guys were supposed to get them. They had everyone get sized, and then about 2 months before they left, they were told there wasn't any money for them so they had to wear their DCUs.

Currently, I think the only branches that are still wearing the DCUs are the Air Force and Navy. (Air Force waiting for the ABU to be fully initiated). The Navy is probably going to be wearing the DCU for a while until they get their own digitized uniform.

You "think" incorrectly.

As I already posted, the AF are all being issued ABUs when they deploy. The Navy does wear them, until they finalize their new uniform.

That may be, but isn't the mandatory wear date of the ABU sometime in 2011?

Yes but DCUs are phased out for the Air Force, they are no longer being issued to troops deploying. People heading overseas are now getting issued ABUs, and trainees in BMT are being issued ABUs as well.

Thank you all very much for taking time out of your day to answer my question. Now when someone mentions DCU's I won't be dumb founded.
