Airmen most likely to faint under the needle

Feeling woozy after your latest round of immunization shots? Then you’re probably a male airman.

Ten years of records showed that 2,612 service members passed out cold — and fell down — after a nurse slowly inserted a thin half-inch of steel into their biceps or buttocks.

Data from the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center shows that the rate of airmen who fell out was twice that of soldiers and sailors — Marines fall in between — and that twice as many men as women were among the fainthearted. The overall numbers also are rising; today’s service members are 2½ times more likely to faint from getting a shot than they were in 1998.

Possibly worse than the risk of ridicule is the risk of injury, the report states, “particularly when collapse leads to forceful contact between the face or skull ... and a sharp or solid object nearby.” Researchers found 150 examples of fractures, brain injuries, open wounds, contusions, sprains and strains.

Fainting occurs when blood vessels dilate and blood pressure decreases among people who stand for too long, don’t like the sight of blood or fear pain, experts say.

How about when some of your medical people suck?

When I got back from Iraq, we filed into one of our hangars to have a post-deployment blood draw. The LT drew my blood, had me hold the gauze for a second, then told me I was good to take it off and be on my way.

Well I removed the gauze and some blood spurted and then sort of oozed out of my arm. Guess I wasn't ready huh?

Ouch, yea, thats not good, At our unit's blood drive last year, we had a Sgt pass out with the needle still in his arm, he fell on the floor, and the needle ripped out, he still has the scar from it.

Funny story, back when I enlisted, I didn't have to go to MEPS. They did everything right at my base. I was having my blood drawn, and after she initially inserted the needle, I felt an odd after-poke. Then I hear, "Oops I guess I went through the vein and a little bit farther." Needless to say that combined with the fact that I had to fast for 12 hours beforehand led to me passing out and a quick trip to the ER. But hey, I was back in time to swear in a couple hours later.

Man that would suck, when I went to MEPS to Ship, the Civvie doing Blood that day, welcomed me with:
"Hey Soldier, hows it going?"
"Great Ma'am, how about your self?"
"Im good thanks for asking, Oh by the way, your the first live person I've done this to, only done it on cadavirs before"... You can guess the horror on my face.. But she did a great job, min. ammount of pain, still that conversasion lives in the back of my mind,

Hahahaha you guys think that is funny when I went to MEPS and had to get the scrotum:cough: test to make sure everything is right down there(You know what I'm talking about). Well the guys hands where shaking(I was skeptical becasue a Male was doing the test)he checked my chart and found I was Marine DEP and he looked at me with a straight face and said"Your the only Marine Poolee who hasn't punched me in my face yet". I replied the best way I could" I could if you want me to". He declined of course. I have always of that as really funny.

I guess they didn't have to do that when you enlisted. My recruiter told me thy have to check your scrotum to make sure your testicles are hanging the right way, if one is closer to your body it can make you overheat or something like that. I wasn't listening there was a cute nurse across the room.:D

No, they dont check that, When they check the boys, and have you cough they are checking for prostate cancer, if you have it, when you cough it bulges or something like that,


Uh, no. They are actually checking for hernias. When they check the prostate, it involves a lubricant similar in consistency to axle grease and the words "bend over and spread'em."

LMFAO ROTFL. It is so true lol. I've heard horror stories. Storm told me a similar story when he went to MEPS. PM Me if your curious-its along the lines of the above, but do not want to humiliate the guy-after all I still care about him.

That doesn't really matter to me, the way it feels. I felt really violated. My friends is afraid to go to MEPS because he doesn't want to get his finger pricked.
