San Fransisco Drops JROTC Program???

Hello Everyone,

I just heard on the Fox News at http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,431526,00.html that San Fransisco is trying to drop their JROTC program.

I wanted to see what you guys thought on this program being dropped. I personally think that this program is beneficial, because it teaches the kids discipline, honor, integrity and ethics. It is a program that teaches things that not many people can learn elsewhere. The people are saying that they do not think it is appropriate for these kids to be in such a program that is used for a recruitment tool, but I do not feel JROTC is a recruitment tool, while it teaches that of the Military, these kids are not under contract. Would they rather the kids be out on the streets doing drugs and in gangs? If it is funding that is an issue, they can fundraise.

Could have been a different school in San Fransisco, but this one is going on today. JROTC is not a Military Recruitment program though, it is meant only for people to better themselves, your not signing a contract with the Military, your also not told "Oh if you join JROTC you have to go in the Military" I know many people that are in JROTC just to get a physical education credit, or simply to challenge themselves, or even to learn discipline. As far as the Gay part, I don't agree with it personally as a Christian, but that is their choice, I've seen my share of Gay people in the Army, but the Dont Ask Don't Tell rule was in effect, you shouldnt go around openly telling people, and by no means express PDA while in uniform. Why is San Fransisco trying to get rid of one of the best programs out there??

Can we please watch the language. I think it's wrong also but I live real far away and the only thing I ca do is complain. MP girl is there a website where we can sign a petition to help stop this? If not is there anything that we could as cadets? That's what we should be worrying about.

Signing a petition is only waisting your time and effort. 'Frisco isn't going to listen to anything, especially on a matter such as this. Same way their Mayor, Gavin Newsom, supported the decision of four CA Supreme Court Justices to simply overrule the majority vote in the state and legalize gay marriage.

I can't wait to leave this state. :(

Here's what gets me on this:

Board members who decided to kick JROTC out of town see it as arm of the military that reaches into schools, discriminating against gays by enforcing the "don't ask, don't tell" mandate, and recruiting teenagers for an unpopular war.

Initiate rant:

JROTC is not an arm of the military! Although it is a military oriented program, it requires of or asks no commitment to any branch of the military or para military organization.

I have never seen or heard of any JROTC class discriminate against gays, religions, social status, etc! Saying that JROTC programs enforce a "don't ask, don't tell" mandate is absolutely absurd!

And recruiting teenagers for an unpopular war? Well, I think I just said that JROTC requires no military commitment. In fact, I remember that I had to sign a form sent out by the Air Force (AFJROTC cadet) saying that I understood that the USAF or any other military service requires or asks my service to them.

And an unpopular war? Really, an unpopular war? I will not deny that most Americans disagree with this "war on terror" methodology, but those that are willingly signing up to fight a war against the bad men who killed our fellow country men think that the war itself is "unpopular." The only unpopular aspect of this war to me is the course of action (or lack there of) that it has taken. But that discussion is another time and another thread.

JROTC being banned? What right do these people have for taking away a program that has helped so many? Take away a voluntary program that focuses on leadership, community service, and physical fitness; I don't see any other high school class doing those things.

These people that make these anti-JROTC statements are ridiculous. I'll call them whack jobs with a hard on for disestablishment of high school students...

It is apparent that the JROTC program is a recruiting tool.

Maybe she should get her facts straight before making such a bold accusation.

The AFJROTC mission is as follows: "Develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community."

To accuse JROTC of the "wrongs" they are responsible for, as done in the article, just shows a lack of research and understanding done by the accuser.

I'd like to echo what PC has said. Mostly because even if we petitioned this, they would still try to over rule it.

Others have pointed out that JROTC is not a recruiting tool, is an elective course and meant to better the Cadets into citizens. I'd also like to add that maybe 2 out of 2000 end up joining the Military.

At my high school, we did not have a JROTC program, however, we ended up having the largest amount of people join the service in the year 2007. There were 20 of us including myself at the Memorial Day Assembly that year. I HATE to see these Cadets suffer by loosing such a beneficial program, but do not think there is much we can do here.
