what are some ways that I can stand out above my peers so that when next promotion comes, I will have a better chance of "being noticed" like some of the cadets who were promoted to C/LCPL directly from C/PVT in my class.

Well cadet, this is what you should do:
1. Ace your tests
2. Ace your PT tests
3. Ace your uniform inspections
4. Be polite, and get your work done.
Now, this is what gets people promoted (in my battalion at least).
1. Suck up to the SAI.
2. Befriend the BC.
3. Join Staff.
4. Befriend your CO.
Well... there ya go.
Use the first set, please.

I am truly sorry if that is what gets people promoted in your battalion. The first set of guidelines you gave are pretty much what it should be, plus being generally active in teams and after school activities.

Do anything you can to help out, but don't get in the way. Don't make it a point to your CO that you want to be promoted, and don't hope to jump rank, that will only lead to disappointment. Keep your head on strait and do well in everything you do. Its all the basic stuff that people REALLY notice. Just be sharper and more prepared than other cadets around you, but help them out if they are not. Things like this get you noticed.

Be careful, you might get what you wish for.
"Getting noticed" is a double-edged sword.
One, it might bring you attention to get promotion and more responsibilty.
But...
Two, it will raise expectations. If you do not come through when given the higher rank and responsibilty, then you might find yourself on the out of favor when the "choice" assignments are given out.
Just something to think about.

And think about it this way as well. When you going away to Basic Training, you probably don't want to get noticed. This will save you from the wrath of your instructors. I managed to stay in the background until I only had about 2 weeks left, and it made my life a lot easier. Not to mention, when my instructor finally realized who I was, it was due to my scoring very high on our exam, pt exam, and being an ace in the hole when it came to executing fire drills. So at that point him noticing me was a good thing, as I had my stuff squared away.

Here's what I did. I went above the average cadet. I spent hours getting my uniform ready for the next week and doing really small things that helped my AI and SAI alot. It helps alot, trust me. Another thing is don't take yourself to seriously.

Do your job to the best of your ability. Do that and rank, responsibility, and awards will find you. Don't campaign for a position...brown noses are usually accompanied with slick sleeves and empty epaulettes (if you need that explained, let me know). Good luck and God bless.

On top of everything that has been said, like having your uniform squared away and doing well on tests; you have to remember to be at least somewhat social. Let others know who you are and just in general make yourself known to people.

We have a Cadet in our program who only does color guard and he's obssesed. We where having a staff meeting and we said "color guard" and he popped out of no where and said"what about Color Guard". He's not going to make it past E-4.

Don't keep him down just because he loves an activity. Encourage him to join other teams and become more active overall.

Woah woah woah, cadets don't make it to E-4, they make it to the cadet rank equivalent. Remember E-4 is a pay grade, not a rank. In my case, my pay grade is E-5, but my rank is Staff Sergeant.

I concur. Sounds like a future Color Guard Commander. Use that passion in a positive way.

OK just because I'm having a hard time making cutoff doesn't mean I'll not make it past E-4...LOL... (and for the record, for those who know how the system works, I'm sitting at 602 and cutoff this month was 623 )
In all seriousness, heed the good SSgt and MAJ's advice in both of their replies. The worst thing you can do to someone is to take away their motivation.

Hey I'm totally on his side he should be Commander when I leave, but the thing is nobody on staff and no leaders like him. In laymans terms that means Junio NCO your whole four years. He is very, very, very cocky also, today we had our first drill team practice so me and our XO took them out and there and we drilled them so we could give them the drill test next week and he just sat down. I went over to him and aked him why and he replied"I'm to good for this I'm better than you and our XO at drill". Thats why.

Now him being stuck at a lower rank makes more sense. If he doesn't follow directions or respect others then he should not be put in a position of responsibility where he could abuse his power.

I'm sorry about not posting the whole story. I am working on him, me and our BNCO where talking about him today and we think it's his brothers fault. His brother is active-duty in the Army and he thinks that makes him better than us.

You need to explain to him that another person's accomplishments do not indcicate anything for someone else. That's like saying just because your Mike Tyson's brother that makes you a great boxer, when in fact, it doesn't. He should be subject to the same rules and regulations as every other cadet.

If he doesn't change his attitude he'll never be a Leader in our program. He did the dumbest thing ever. My unit has ACU's and our SAI was going to hand some out and he was on e of those cadets who was going to get a set, but you know he couldn't wait(I told him not to buy them, I didn't tell him why though) and he bought a set of ACU's and Boots.

Why should that be a concern of yours? That Cadet decided to spend his money (or, in that case, waste it) on a set of ACU's. It didn't hurt the unit or other Cadets - so why get upset about it?

Sorry about not answering this one sooner. Myself, our BNCO, and our BN SGT MAJ told him specifically not to buy them. Guess what he did he went out and bought them. He's going to where them on Thursday and that is the day we where going to hand out ACU's to cadet's who we think deserve it. He is one of those cadets.

I'm not too sure how JROTC works (I'm a Sea Cadet), but for us, every single uniform item that is given to us MUST BE RETURNED. Every single thing we are issued is recorded to make sure we don't manage to steal ANYTHING.
Now you are saying ACU's are being handed out. Do they cadets get to keep them? If so, lucky folks! Pretty expensive uniform! If they CAN'T keep it (which is probably the case), then the person who bought it made a nice choice. Some people like to buy the uniform for themselves for airsofting, prancing around the house, for Halloween (hehe), or any other event that may need a combat uniform. I myself bought a set of BDU's weeks before they were issued to me. Granted, they are too big, but at least I get to keep them in the event that I leave the corps. If he wants to spend his money on his own set of ACU's which he can keep on graduating, good for him. Just my humble opinion.

When he says handed out I'm pretty sure he is just talking about them being issued to the cadets, but not for them to hold onto forever, just until they leave the unit.

In my school the staff also bases promotions on community service hours i don't know if your school does i would look into it. Another thing is help others out you are bound to get noticed that way.

In my battalion, we used to give merit promotions... until people started joining Saber Team, Honor Guard, and Color Guard to get promotions. (Drill Team isn't something worth giving merits for in my unit). Then the SAI got rid of them.

Okay, this thread has been thrown to the birds(not literally). Could we please get this thread back on topic. I know it deals with promotions but not how your unit promotes cadets. Please lets help this cadet and get back on topic so this thread doesn't get locked.
