View Full Version : What're you driving? (Or want to drive.)

I'm posting this in the Cadet forum, but if any adult members feel like giving their word - I'd love to hear it!

I'm curious as to what you currently drive or what you want to drive. When I say this, I'm talking reasonable vehicles that you can actually afford at your current stage in life - not anything crazy like a Ferrari or Lamborghini at age 16. Lets hear the specifics on the car, and why you got it / wanted it.

For me currently, I'm trying to secure this internship with my dad's work. He's a Navy Civilian, so it's a DoD internship, and for a high school student, pays pretty well. With that said, this is what I'm lookin' at:

http://z.about.com/d/trucks/1/0/f/A/1/09TacomaACab_01.jpg

This is pretty much spot on for what I'm hoping to get. An '09 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab. I don't want to spend the extra few thousand on a 4x4, but this, for me at least, is just as good because I'll be getting the Prerunner version. For those who aren't familiar with ToyotaSpeak, a Prerunner is a truck that's equipped with a 4x4 suspension, 4x4 gear ratio, larger wheels, and various off-road preferences (depending on what package you get) like rear-locking differentials.

I know personally Toyotas are great vehicles, especially thier trucks. We've had two Camrys, and my dad has a '97 Tacoma that's still in perfect condition.

For me, this is looking at costing somewhere around 25 to 26K. For some, that may be a lot, but given the job I'll be getting, along with my parents who have pledged to help because of my good grades, it's lookin' good right now.

My parents are giving me their 1995 BMW 5.25i. My mom drives it now but she wants to get a new car so I will get the Beemer.

This car is similar to the one I have.

Last year, I traded in my previous vehicle for a 2008 Ford Escape XLT FWD. For me, it's been everything I was looking to upgrade for. Had a small pickup truck previously, so I was looking for the upgrade in seating space. In terms of fuel economy, I gained a little over what I had before. Overall, it was a better decision and based on how much it's been driven (back and forth to FL a couple times, across GA quite a bit, and up into KY a couple times), it's paid off for me. Slightly cheaper than Phoenix's truck (the one I got was in the $22K range), and I'm proud to say that I have no co-signer or anything like that for it. :D

Drive an 05 Chevy Colorado, which I love.

Restoring from the ground up a 1985 Jeep CJ7. It'll be on a 4.5 in lift, with a 1 in body lift and 35 in tires. Best Jeep going.

Eventually I want to restore a 50s mustang.

Is a 69' Z-28 Camaro too far out for ya'all to believe? Because me and my Dad fixed one up for me a couple of years ago. Ever since i was a little kid, i was amazed at how much muscle this model of the Camaro could produce!

Hands down has to be the Nissan 350Z. Although I can't drive yet (oh, so very close...only a few more months until my license) Since I have no experience driving the car, the best I can come up with is that I love the look of the car. Shallow, I know, but hey! Beautiful car in my eyes.

'08 JEEP Wrangler. Gets me where I wanna go, and has all the room I need. Fun to drive. I've had it in the woods and on the beach...drives equally as well everywhere. V-6, 6-speed, 2 door, and 4wd. Forest green w/ a black hard top. Wish it still had the straight-6 (more torque), but the V-6 gets better MPG.

Well currently, I'm driving a HMMWV. But in "real life" I have a POS Jeep Grand Cherokee with a missing window, and numerous problems, but it gets me around.

I would put up some pictures, but the connection speed is too slow.

1996 Dodge Dakota SLT with the 3.9L V6 Magnum engine in it. Automatic, but with a few extra 'tweaks' to it. This truck has been airborne a few times, though the first time was completely on accident.

This is what I drive around 'for fun...'

http://www.jacksonfirstaid.org/227.jpg

2001 Ford box-type ambulance. This specific ambulance is ambulance 227 on the Jackson First Aid Squad, and it is for all intents and purposes my ambulance. I've done so much with regards to this ambulance (i.e., added a lot of miles to it, drove it through a brick retaining wall {interesting story behind that, but I'll save it}...), and yet it still runs. At that, the rig's developed a personality that apparently likes me. Some people have had issues starting her, only for me to get in right after them and fire her right up. The plus side of this ambulance as compared to the other ambulances of the fleet is that it has 2 pole lights, which can be focused in any direction, and adjusted for height. She's the only one in our current fleet that has them.

I currently own a 1969 4dr 307 V8 Chevy Nova. I say own because I haven't drove it for the past 4 months because of the incredible insurance and horrible gas mileage. I believe I counted it at 6MPG for city. Don't know the hwy mileage cause the gas gauge isn't working except when and how it wants to. But with the last full tank I had, I got about 48 miles before running out at one of the busy intersections.

Currently I am driving nothing, but in the next few weeks my dad and I are going to a nearby car dealership, and picking up an 89' Honda Civic Hatchback. I love imports because you can do so much to modify them to what you like and want out of a vehicle.

I'm getting a Ford Ranger here pretty soon. My father works with Ford Motor Company so with all the discounts, its better to just buy a new car/truck than a used one. So we are taking advantage of that and probably going with the Ranger. I'll end up upping the engine from its little stock i4 and moving to the V6. Also might get a tow package if the money is right.

My second choice would be an import, more than likely a Nissan 240SX or 90s series Honda Civic. As said before, imports can be modded out to the driver's liking. Plus MPGs would be better than a truck.

Forgive the ignorance, but I thought all Ranger's came stock with a V6. My dad worked at a Ford dealership for years, as well as owned 2 Rangers, and both were of the V6 variety. And in the past when I've looked at stats, I don't remember ever seeing an I4 option. Looking online as I posted this, I see that they were making I4's back in '02 but nowhere near as many options with it as in the '09 Model Year.

BTW, I uploaded the pic of my ride :D

Before I was stuck on a Toyota Tacoma, I was interested in Rangers, but for about the same gas mileage, the Tacoma gets more horsepower in their 4.0L V6 versus the Ford 4.0. (This is in comparing the two through the websites.)

The XL and XLT series come standard with an i4. Of course this is just baseline, and the V6 is available for both and standard on the SPORT and the FX4 Off Road. The i4 engines are more becoming more popular because of their better fuel economy, but they still lack a lot of power. None the less, its a good truck no matter what engine you have in it, and everything's got its limitations.

One thing that really sold me on getting the Lancer was the warranty. Pretty hard to beat.

I would have loved to be able to get an EVO, but it was pretty hard to justify with 9er Domestic. Besides, a computer tune-up every 3800 km would be kinda irritating.

No offense, but showing pictures of cars you "own" generally means you don't have that car and just want to make it sound like you have a good car, plus you don't even get into details on the car. Why not tell people you own a 2008 Honda Accord V6, not everyone knows what an accord looks like.

I have 3 vehicles, my daily driver is a 2007 Pontiac G5 4 cylinder 5 speed.
For hauling and towing I have a 2005 Nissan Frontier XE 4 cylinder 5 speed
and my weekend car is a 2008 Ford Mustang Premium 427R 8 cylinder 5 speed

I have pictures of all the vehicles and I'll post them up later

I'm talking about renting a Lamborghini for the Cadet Ball and/or my prom senior year. I actually have a good friend from my old church who work's, rent's and owns foreign sport's cars and we talked about it and he said if I told him in advance and if he could get some string's pulled he could get me a Bentley or Lamborghini cheaper than a limo. He can also get his hand's on almost any foreign sports car. I know it's sound's real sketchy but I have seen this man work miracle's for fellow youth member's to get stretch limos and exotic car's for special event's. That's one hell of a stretch. I can't even rent a exotic car because I'm not 25, and every exotic car rental won't allow anyone under 25 to rent the car and you need insurance to cover it incase something happens. I'd highly doubt they'd let a 17/18 year old drive round a 400+ horsepower $200,000 car.

Right now, I'm driving my dad's old 1990 Toyota FJ62 Land Cruiser. That thing can get me anywhere I need to go. Pretty cool little truck. Only have one picture, but might have more to follow soon. It's a little gutless, with only an inline 6 cylinder producing ~150HP, but has part-time 4WD system, electric 4WD transfer, windows, locks, and mirrors, AM/FM/Cassette with an old aftermarket CD Player my dad put in about 10 years ago, and seating for five with plenty of room in back. It's served my dad well over 19 years, and now it's my time to put it to good use. First picture is actually mine, next two are from a website off of google image search. Same color, same look, really. Let me know if you want additional pics.

That's of my G5! I don't really have any pics of my truck, I'll get some soon.

Here's my Mustang 427R! I don't keep it at my house, I keep it in a air controlled storage unit.

See, here's the thing. My dad bought a new 2008 Toyota Sequoia, with that 5.7L iForce V8 in it! Hoo, boy, that thing has some kick in it. :inlove: Besides, the Land Cruiser being gutless is just part of its character and personality. Interestingly enough, the Land Cruiser, being as gutless as it is, could actually whup the Sequoia's butt off-road. Just the way it was designed, really. And, please, it's not an SUV. No such thing back in 1990. It's technically a Wagon. (No joke, they marketed it in some places as a station wagon)

My family had one station wagon (it was given to us by some friends), in 2002-2003. We drove down to the Church of God Assembly in San Antonio, Texas and halfway down there it broke down three times (we fixed it the first two times) and we got stuck in some little town called Judd or something like that. The only thing that was good about that town was the food:D.

I'm not going to get into the details of SUV's and station wagons, but Land Cruisers are SUV's. They have been since Toyota introduced them in 1951. They might have a station wagon body style, but they are SUV's.

Just an fyi, SUV's were in existence in 1990. They've been in existence since the 50's.

The earliest SUV I know of is the 1948 Willie's Jeep Station Wagon. It is classified as an SUV and is argued to be the first one.

By definition, you're right, but has the actual term been in use since then? The literal definition warrants those early cars as SUVs, but I'm more talking about the use of the term itself. Regardless, still a cool vehicle!:D

The actual term itself came around the early 80's with the Jeep Cherokee while Jeep was owned by American Motors. After that older vehicles began to be reclassed that fit in the SUV class. Allthough the popularity of SUV's didn't happen till around the late 90's. Though utility vehicles have been used for a long time due to their offroad capabilities. It's one of the biggest reasons the military used Jeeps back then before they needed a new vehicle that could meet their requirements, and that's why we have the HMMWV's now.

(Interesting fact. At the time when the Army was looking for a HMMWV Lamborghini designed a prototype called the Cheetah. It used a Chrysler 5.9 liter v8. The Army destroyed the prototype and AM General, a subsidary of AMC, developed a prototype which is what the Army uses now. Of course AMC and AM General are now owned by GM and the Hummer of course as mostly everyone knows is the civilian version of the Humvee.

The funny thing about the Cheetah is that they used a Damlier Chrysler engine. When they developed the Cheetah, Ferrucio Lamborghini still owned the Lamborghini name. In 1984 Lamborghini declared bankruptcy and Mimram bought the company. 4 years later Damlier Chrysler bought Mimram and acquired Lamborghini through the purchase. Damlier Chrysler owned Lamborghini from 1987 till 1994. I always found it interesting that they developed a prototype for the Army, using a engine developed by a company they later own owned them.)

Why a 2008? Why not a 2010? They've made some nice improvements to the Mustang and I would much rather have the 2010 than a 2008.

Also FYI, the picture you posted isn't a GT, it's the same car I have which is a 427R (Or if it is a GT it has the same body kit as my Mustang)

There ya go! lol

You can step it up a notch and for 115,000 you can get the Audi R8 and it comes with a 4.2l v8, 420hp 0-60 in 4.4 top speed of 183mph

Performance wise it's better than the S8, and you will save a little bit in gas since the S8 has a 5.2l v10

I like the way the 2008 looks, I wouldn't be using it for street racing or anything so I won't necessarily need the fastest ride around. I don't know about the body kit, I found the picture on google, and the image was labeled as a GT.

To each his own, I actually like the 2010 look more. It's not a drastic change as they've only done minor changes to it. Even still why not go for the 2009, they're the exact same thing, just one is newer.

Also, the 2010 isn't really any faster. It has a small HP gain, but nothing that throws it over the top.

This is probably something what you were talking about:

and here is the 2010 version

As you can see, there's not a drastic change, it just looks a little more aggressive now :)

StormCrow
05-22-2009, 09:23 PM
Not necessarily, many muscle cars that run on the track have at least a 100 shot of nitro in it just to give it a kick. Many Camaros and Mustangs kick a 200 shot, and hit the finish in a quick 8 and a half to 9 and a half seconds. I just depends on what you're gonna be using it for. Generally on the street you shouldn't put nitrous in a car like that because it's barely legal as it is. But if you're taking it to the track, of course...

I like the unlimited due to the pricing, better stability and roominess. Mtn, with any Jeep, you buy the basic then upgrade from there. I just got this back in December and have only done minor work on it since, but the big stuff is coming soon.
