Between 8:00 and 8:30 this morning an anonymous parent called my school to say that there may be weapons on campus. At 10:00 an Intruder on Campus alert was issued to lock down the school. Local police and the School Police questioned the student reported by the parent and others involved and found a .357 magnum, a .38 special, and a .22. They also found 50+ rounds of ammunition. They determined that the guns were bought by the student with the intent to sell them to fellow students. Four people were arrested and many more were searched. We were finally released at 12:40.

Has anyone else ever had anything like this happen at their school?

Good lord! How does someone under the age of 21 (which is when they kick you out of high school) even obtain these weapons? A .22 is fairly common, as for the other two, how do you go about obtaining one of these (rhetorical, I don't really want to know). Things like this are ridiculous, and plague our generation. I've HEARD of deals for guns and drugs going down at my school, but I've never seen them (at least the guns part), and there hasn't been any weapon ever found at our school. The street right next to the high school where I am is pretty violent though. Last week there was a shoot out before school, no casualties or suspects though... These people that partake in these events have no reason to be a part of our society...

The strange thing about this whole deal was that I go to the "good" school for my area. To get in you must have a good GPA(3.0), no suspensions, and a good resume. Normally things like this don't happen at my school.

I've been through plenty of lock downs, but never one that has actually ended up being for real. It is pretty scary that there was a two hour gap between the report and action, if he had been intending to shoot anyone he would have had plenty of time to do it...

Apparently they didn't want to set off a false alarm, so they were questioning the student that the parent ID until they had a general idea of what they were looking for and who had it.

I just found a good new story describing what happened (edited so as not to show the name of the high school or new station.)

********, OK - Three guns were found at ******** ****** * ********** High School. The school was on lockdown for about three hours on Wednesday while school leaders and police searched for the guns. Students were not allowed out of their classrooms and no one was allowed in or out of the building.

It happened because a student put three unloaded guns into his backpack, along with ammunition and brought them to school to sell to three other boys. What saved the day was an anonymous tip from a parent.

The police cars parked out front were a sure sign something was wrong inside ****** * ********** High School.

An anonymous parent called in a tip: guns, somewhere on the 300-thousand square foot campus.

They locked down the school, began searching and within three hours found the thing nightmares are made of.

"You're thinking what if? Any administrator will tell you that's not the what if they want to deal with," said Principal ****** ******.

They found a .22 caliber, a .38 Special and a .357 Magnum. Two were in a backpack in a classroom. The third was in a separate classroom.

All four boys, ages 14 to 16 and of different races, were taken to the juvenile bureau. The school's automatic calling system notified parents twice, plus a note was sent home with students.

"I came to pick her up. She told me she's freaking out. It was scary for them," said parent ***** ********.

Every ******** high school has metal detectors, but they are used randomly. Leaders say it's not practical to use them every day because it could take up to three hours to screen 1,200 students.

"A backpack can set off a metal detector; a student's clothing can set off a metal detector, so every single student must be searched. It's not just a matter of walking through and you're clean," said the district's Tami Marler.

Parents, including a former News On * employee who has a son at ****** *, say this is a wake-up call for everyone.

"I was speechless because you think it won't happen at your school. But, you think of all the things going on all over our nation. I thought we were immune, being the number one school in the state, being one of the top schools in the nation, this doesn't happen at ****** *, but this is a wake up for all that we're not safe," said parent **** *******.

There's no telling what would have happened, if a parent hadn't been brave enough to pick up the phone.

The principal told The News On * that students were also very good about talking about what they knew or had heard and that's what led to the guns.

The staff is meeting to talk about what to do to stop this from happening again.

The difference between you and the people at my school is that you are responsible with those firearms and the students at my school weren't.

Uhhmmm... That is just plain scary. I own more than a few myself, but since I have kids each has a trigger lock, in a locked case, in a double locked room that only my wife and I have a key to(that is easy enough for us to access if need be). Even if the kids are 100% trustworthy, there is still the unknown element of an intruder.

Even if the kids are 100% trustworthy, there is still the unknown element of an intruder.

I have been shooting firearms and practicing EXCELLENT firearm safety since I was 8. Not to mention I've shot literally 250 different firearms.........dont worry.........

That has NEVER and I say NEVER happened at my school. There have been big drug deals, gangs and that stuff all around campus. I have been in the middle of it because a lot of those people live in my neighborhood and are very good friends of mine. My frind got shot a year ago because his brother was a BLOOD and had screwed some Crips (crabs) out of four thousand dollars. They came into his house and shot him when he was using the bathroom. I am not perfect, I have been to jail because of assault. I got jumped late at night after a football game because I have friends in a rival gang and one guy stabbed me and I took the knife out and stabbed him. I also beat my dad up, but that is for another time. Nobody messes with JROTC (cause we're one hard Mother-Freakers). I myself have gotten into a lot of fights at school and outside of school, my AI and SAI know that half of our leaders get into fights outside of school because of our friends outside of JROTC. A guy who was in prison came and spoke at our school and told our administrators that our school was the closest thing to prison a school could be. I remeber a guy got stabbed and beat almost to death when I was a freshman. You have to survive at my school. I just don't survive I thrive. The Marine Corps is my only way out and I'm going to take it.

Dude, you should REALLY consider picking your friends wisely. You're not gonna be a Marine if you get your ass capped because you're "friends" with the wrong people........

How do you OWN firearms? You aren't even 18 years of age yet. Even your signature says you will be only 17 in 2010... I may be wrong (doubt it though), but you have to be at least 18 to own a long gun (rifle, carbine, shotgun, etc.) and at least 21 to own a pistol. I don't believe its proper for kids or teens, this is coming from another kid/teen, to have access to firearms. Its great that you have been practicing gun control since you were 8, but firearms are still firearms, and everyone makes mistakes. That's why there are laws for these things.

Last week a bomb threat was called in to every school in my county. Pretty crazy stuff. They eventually caught the guy, seems he had just gotten out of jail for terroristic threatning the night before. Not anything too wild happens around here, a good deal of the stuff that happens is just racial(so theres a pretty good deal of tension in my town).

I like my school because it was created during the desegregation and has a very mixed group of students, and everyone gets along well with everyone else. The racial make-up of the school is about 44% black, 44% white, and 8% other. However, there is no set percentage that one race must account for. It is entirely based on academics, behavior, and the application process.

Sure, I've had lots of lock downs in my middle and high school years. The one that I will never forget was the one for Fallen Officer Michael Briggs, a best friend, an officer, and a Marine. He was gunned down early in the morning by a Mike Addison, later he died at Elliot Hospital and Addison ran. Which meant that he was armed and robbed and that he was dangerous and the cops wanted him, and so we all went on lock down. Pretty scary to be locked in a room not knowing what can happen outside that room.

My state, you can operate/own a firearm at any age. Can't buy them until you are 18 for rifles/shotguns/muzzleloaders or 21 for handguns. Must also be those ages to buy the appropriate ammunition.

It's actually pretty dumb. You can have your parent buy you the gun, walk around with it open carry, shoot it, load it, kill things, but you can't buy the ammo. So, parent, again, buys ammunition and right at the register can hand it over to their 14 year old.

Oh, and Wal*Mart won't let you buy the gun and the ammunition in the same purchase - duh!

My teacher says during hunting season keep your rifle in your truck and out of sight and dont tell everybody its in there. Because most of us go hunting before and after school.

You better be careful, because I don't know how it is in your state, but in my state you can be suspended for a full calendar year and face criminal charges for having a firearm on campus.

I didn't mean to insult anyone, I guess I just got confused as to why in the world you can't buy something that you can own. The idea that someone can buy a gun for you, then give it to you as a proper owner is stupid to me. That's like going to the bar and having mommy buy you a bear then giving it to you because you can't buy it. And don't say its not the same thing, 'cause alcohol kills people just like guns lol! :D But its not a funny situation really. I am not all up in arms (no duh, don't own guns lol) about this saying that if you are not an adult you shouldn't ever shoot a gun. I just think that guns belong on ranges and hunting (for domestic purposes of course). I just don't think that owning a gun but not being able to buy that gun is a ridiculous concept...
