I'm a bit astounded. I didn't see any threads about this elsewhere on the board. Maybe I missed it. But, I just wanted to take a moment and thank all the people who are serving/have served in our military, regardless of how many tours of duty they've done, whether they're active duty or a reservist, or any other factor that may alienate them in some people's minds. The fact of the matter is, regardless of the above factors, they are serving our country. And, I would like to take another moment to thank everyone who has served 20 years or more in any service, active duty or not. Thank you so much, all of you, for serving our country, for putting forth your life to protect our people, our Constitution, and the ground we live on.
Now, I've got a heart-warming story about today. I sat through three Veteran's Day Ceremonies today, being in the Color Guard at all three. I saw the veterans all dressed up. I saw the videos and the pictures, and the chorus's singing and the band's playing. But, you know what touched me the most? We did one of these Color Guards at an elementary school, and, it was the most supportive, thankful group of kids I've ever seen towards veterans (And, I've sat through at least one ceremony every year I've been in school, plus four this year, which makes 16 ceremonies I've attended). These kids had their little American flags up, and they were lined up in the hallways as the veterans made their way around the school, screaming and shouting and waving their flags and hugging and high-fiving and simply thanking the veterans. Not to mention they gave a standing ovation to the veterans at the beginning of the ceremony. And, I mean, it was just really nice seeing kids so thankful. I'll be honest, when I was a kid, I didn't really know what a veteran was, and didn't care. I was young, going to war seemed a fact of life; I never thought to thank people for doing it. I mean, these kids were all out shouting "Thank you!" and everything. Sure, they didn't necessarily understand they were thanking people who had prolly come close to death on more than one occasion for their country, and, sure they didn't understand what exactly a 'veteran' was (they were thanking us too, because we were in uniform), but, they were thankful. And, I dunno. I wanted to share that. It was touching.
But, thank you, everyone who has gone into a servive and served our country! Our country owes its existence to you!
EDIT: Argh, found the post. But, it's in the 18+ forum. So, I do believe this one is valid, unless I missed something.
