Drill Team Uniforms

Hey guys,

My unit may actually be getting some funds for some CG and/or Drill Team special uniforms. I (as CG CC) and the Drill Team CC are charged with the creation of these uniforms, and we have never had one for our school, or we did like 10 years ago, and we would just like to have a few ideas for what other AF schools do. We see other AF schools at competitions, but mostly they are the same schools and all the others are Navy, Army, and even the occasional Marines. I'm just curious as to what your Color Guard or Drill Team Does.

The Basis for your DC Uniform should be the Service Blue Uniform, or the Open Collar Blues, BDU's are generally not allowed at some meets. If you want some great gear...go to http://www.paradestore.com

My old unit used to use the Air Force Honor Guard package, but you can pretty much make your own from the things sold there.

My Drill Team is modeled after the USAF Honor Guard. We have the silver cord, silver striped pants, and the service caps with the winged star on them. I recommend you wear the blues with coraframs and anything but flight caps. You might want to look into the "Chrome-Dome" helmets too, although a few people might not like them. Also, berets are simple and they look good (in my opinion). The only problem would be shaping them.

Also, ascots are very good to have. Some places call them "scarves."

But, you shouldn't confine your self to just ascots. I mean there is so much more that you can do and to be honest with you I really don't like them because in my opinion they are uncomfortable and just get in the way.

I was just adding ascots to the list of things Airborne Infantry has said. Personally, I think that if used with the right cords and berets/service caps/helmets they can add a lot to the look of the uniform.

I like it all but one thing, the corfam shoes, I personally think its cheating when there are inspections at your competition, and you can get just as brilliant a shine with military issue bates.

I think that's what I'll aim at though, something that looks like the USAF Honor Guard.

The only reason we use the coraframs is because all of our competition does (if you can't beat 'em, join 'em) and trying to compete with coraframs while using hand shined shoes, especially after you've just done exhibition and/or regulation drill with them, is close to impossible. We also use ascots as well, they used to be black but this year we're going to sew on the new USAF blue winged star insignia and wear them like that. Also, we were thinking of sewing on nametapes like BDUs instead of pinning them on like Class A's but our Brigade HQ wouldn't let us. No matter what your team wears though, just make sure it's shiny, neat, clean, and has military bearing. If you do that, what you wear won't really matter.

Generally speaking,

You have to beware of wearing coraframs because not all competitions allow them, and most competition that I know of that hold Inspection as an event require you to wear your shined oxfords only. So you need to keep both handy...

One thing while we are on footwear, something that I like to use are the 'cheater bars' and one occasion taps, but not all the time.

My unit, several years back had a jacket created specifically for the Drill Team. The only time we use the jacket with our uniforms is when we perform exhibition drill, but they look pretty snazzy. Something to consider.
