Im now in my 8th week of basic and loving it. It's nothing like I had expected, everything is fun and I have some great DS's. If you have any questions about basic send me a pm and I'll answer it as soon as I can.

Anybody who is at basic and loving it isn't getting trained.

If you're talking anything outside the couple phone calls you get in BCT, have a good source to back it up. We may be kinder & gentler, but I sure as hell hope that the standards for training haven't dropped so low that the kids in BCT are tweeting at the range...

No but my friend got to use his phone several times. He used it to call family, friends and charged other soldier's money to look at explicit websites and videos. My other friend uses her phone to text people. She told me that she takes it into the closet and uses it. She got to keep it because she put it in her money valuable bag. She has a hard time charging it though.

These people you mention are not following the rules then. When I went to BCT, you were required to put anything not authorized in your bag that remained in storage until the end of the cycle. I can remember more than a couple times where wall lockers would be spread across rooms because unauthorized items would be found; items ranging from cell phones to components of MRE's.

If so that's pretty sad...I didn't even expect that to be allowed and I'm still a civilian.

When I was at Sandhill, another Company had cell phones from Week One Day 2, (11C's) We were authorized use of our cell phone's the week following our Weapon's turn in, It differs from Company to Company.

We're talking 'basic' here, right? As in just got in the Army, don't even have an MOS, not an MOS school?

Im talking OSUT which is "Basic" for Combat Arms MOS's, more in-depth, 11B and 11C, Sir, its been dumbed down to a point where its to easy for a lot of people, not many Mind F.... games, Smokings are few and far between, its insane, Heck while I was at Sandhill, A company that started same day as us, all 11B's went up Honor hill after Final FTX with just LBV, IBA, and Weapon, just because my Company had a huge amount of people fall out from the final ruck in.

Why and when did they lower standards to such a level?...a reason I want to be in the Army is because I like challenging myself and for the discipline and regimented lifestyle, and I don't want "dumbed down training". Besides the fact that they couldn't complete the ruck in, why did they fall out when it was the final one in (i.e. light at the end of the tunnel, would make me all the more motivated to keep on going)? This pattern has also, I've seen, begun in our JROTC unit, where there is no real enthusiasm to do anything or "keep on truckin' ". Not a good sign for the future...:nervous:

Yes you can use your cell phones in basic. We can use them Saturday night and Sunday, but as far as i know its only our battalion. Also you can use the Internet at the main PX (yes they let us goto the PX). You can get picked to goto the PX on Sunday from 13:00 to 16:00 for excelling in certain training exercises and for high pt scores.

When I was in USAF basic training (2001), we were not allowed cell phones and only allowed to use pay phones in our last week training.
It would seem things have loosened up since then.

Training as we once knew it is now officially a joke. Not using you specifically Delta, but your story as proof.

The best you can do is take it with a grain of salt and try to glean as much useful information as you can from it.

It differs from Battalion to Battalion. We always lock up the cell phones in our office and they are only used to expedite the "phone home" process on Sundays, then we lock them back up. Our soup sandwiches aren't allowed to go to the PX until family day, and I bring the smoke.
It changed for a lot of units because of politics. Some BC's and CSM's want to appear to be modernized, so they become hat hunters. Swear, talk too loudly or "aggressively" and they will dress you down in front of your joes. I've been lucky. I've never had to deal with any of that garbage. My previous 1SG's rule was as long as we didn't touch them or injure them, he didn't care what we did.

If that is the way basic training is ran presently, im kind of dissapointed. In my opinion, basic training should be ran very hard, and strenous. Cell phones possibly allowed once, and thats half way through, and thats if i was feeling the recruits did an oustanding job so far. Today's military might be kinder, and gentler, but easyer should not fit in there as well.
