I recently inherited a set of sterling silver wings that look like aviator wings except instead of the center crest it has a torch. The torch handle is gold and the red flame projects straight up (similar to pathfinder insignia except the flame flies to the right side on the pathfinder insignia). Across the bottom is an arched banner that reads "INSTRUCTOR". The wings measure 2 1/4" wide by 1 1/4" high. The are two pin backs, one near each wing tip and one screw back at the middle. Can anyone help me identify this item?

There's a possibility they may be JROTC related. The torch, especially as you described it, is used a lot in the AFJROTC symbol. Might be an area to start checking, might not.

Just a suggestion :D Someone with much more knowledge and experience should be along shortly.

I haven't found anything on the subject of what their wings looked like, but it might have to do with the civilian aviation instructors we used during WWII.

Clamper,

Welcome aboard. If you would kindly proceed to the New Members Forum and post a brief intro, we would be appreciative.

As to the wings, if you could post a picture of them, it would help in identifying them for you.

Sounds like you have a pair of old USAF enlisted Instructors wings. These were worn by MTI's from the late 50's to the late 60's. I believe they were replaced in 68 or 69 by the round enamelled instructors badge. (There were Master Instructors badges like this also.) The winged torch was taken from the old Air Training Command patch. These are sometimes refered to as the "Flying Popsicle".

And we have our winner!

They could also have been worn as both a breast badge and a cap device. (Source (http://usafflagranks.com/usaf_obsolete_insignia.html))
