I just found out today, officially, that I am above the cut for E7! In the Coast Guard, this is a huge threshold to cross. The soonest I can be advanced is 01Jan, but am guaranteed to have it before 31Dec09. I am number two on the list so I am hoping it is closer to the January date. Please forgive my tone, but this is the most excited I have been in a very long time!:p

Stepping into the Senior NCO ranks is a huge step. One that really puts the meaning into one's career track. I was very proud when I tacked on my Master Sergeant Stripes, even more so when I added the Diamond Device for a First Sergeant.
A Wonderful personal achievement for you Paul! Well Done!

Thanks for the kind words of support!! They sincerely mean a lot, as I have a lot of respect for the lot of ya!
As a former Devil Dog, I sorta wish I were tacking on Gunny but Coasties and Devil Dogs have always made a great team(since WW2!).
Since I graduated the Air Force's SF-IDMT(Advanced Independent Duty Medical Technician) course at Sheppard AFB, I figured that I might as well go ahead and attend the Air Force's Senior NCO School. (The CG and the AF have some sort of agreement for a student exchange for this school).
I have just received orders to the new CG Homeland Defense class cutter, the USCGC BERTHOLF next July1. She was just commissioned on the CG's Birthday on 4 Aug. By the time I report, she should be fully operational!! She is not large by Naval standards, but she has a bit of a kick!! I excited to see what the adventures the CG's new flagship will be in for!

Paul, what's the breakdown of ratings on that kind of cutter? Are there a lot of BMs? GMs?
Also, is it common for a Senior Enlisted Advisor to be appointed before the ship itself is ready for duty? The pamphlet says that the Command Senior Chief was appointed 13 days before the ship was launched...

Congrats! Do they have the Chief's Mess in the Coast Guard too? Fresh brewed lifer juice and meals served on fine china? Or is it just hotdogs for dinner and pop tarts for breakfast? :D
We'll cross paths someday and share a beer at an impromptu wet'n down!

Well, I am sure that there would be quite a few BMs(Boatswain Mates) on there and a couple of GMs(Gunner's Mates). Some other rates would include, OSs(Operational Specialists), MKs(Machinery Technicians), EMs(Electricians Mates), a couple of HSs(Health Services Technicians), DCs(Damage Controlmen), ETs(Electrical Techs), a couple of YNs(Yeomen), SKs(Store Keepers), Firemen(non rated engineering E3s and below), and Seamen(non rated deck seamen E3s and below).
The first crew was present a couple years before the cutter was commissioned to aid in her initial outfitting and sea trials, to bring her into operational standards. For example, the HSC I am replacing was in charge of getting the sickbay all set up and user friendly. Who else better to do this than a shipboard corpsman! This is a lengthy process. I am taking over in time to get to start doing the cool stuff! Operational patrols!

Thanks for the congrats... but I am not there yet! I will not be there until I am pinned and have gone threw the initiation!
Ben,
I would have no idea what goes on in the Chief's Mess, as of yet! I still have a few more months before I am to be "invited" in there. I would love to share a beverage with you, Ben!!

Did you ever see the movie "Sgt Bilko" where all the gambling tables and bars hide or convert into spartan (sp?) work stations when the wrong person walks in? That's the Chief's Mess. :D

Congrats on getting ahead of the pack! Being in the top 10 is sometimes hard to do, but being 1 of the top 2 is exceptional.
I am myself eagerly awaiting my states E-5 to E-6 EPPS list to come out. Last year I was the last person on the list in the 63B MOS, but this year I have a fair bit of college credit turned in(62 Semester hours) along with correspondence courses as well, so hopefully I can at least climb from the bottom to the top 20 this year.

Did you enjoy your time at Sheppard? It is clearly one of the best bases in the Air Force. I loved the 16 weeks I've spent there in my career.
Seriously though, congratulations on the promotion!

Thanks again for all the kind words.
I loved my time at Sheppard. I was a sort of base curiosity, being the only CG person on the base. I was also single at the time. I had a lot of fun! :inlove: Oh... uhhhmmm. I meant to say that I learned a lot during my time there!

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have never worked with the CG but the Air Force and our other services do a very good job of selecting people for promotion. I'm sure you not only have earned your promotion but you were selected because you have the potential to operate at a higher level of responsibility.
