So by now you've all heard of our most recent POW PFC Bowe Bergdahl well i mean him, the army, or his family no disrespect when i make the following comments....
1. THE MAN WALKED OUT OF THE GATE WITHOUT ARMOR, A WEAPON, NOTHING!
2. WHY WASN'T HE QUESTIONED?
3. WHERE WERE THE SENTRIES?
4. WHO WAS IN CHARGE OF THIS SOLDIER?
5. THIS IS A U.S. SOLDIER WITH MILITARY TRAINING AND HE JUST STROLLS ON OUT WITHOUT ARMOR OR WEAPON....ME WITH NO MILITARY TRAINING OTHER THAN THE KNOWLEDGE THAT I'VE COLLECTED FROM NJROTC AND MY DAD AND OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS I KNOW BETTER THAN TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT!
6. HONESTLY!
Although I do think his action are questionable...He is a POW and I will support and pray for him and and his family.
Here's the link to the news story as of tonight.

Let's not play armchair quarterback until the facts come out. He's young and only a PFC. It's very possible that it was as much the PSG's error for not keeping track of his people as it was the PFC's for putting himself in a bad spot. Do any of us know what we would do as a young servicemember on an overseas deployment? Training helps, but it often goes right out the window when the real crap hits the fan.
Prayers out for this young man. :salute:

I guess you're right...I'm not upset with him, i'm upset with whoever's in charge of him. They're responsible for him and they let this happen. You're right he is very young, I would know, my boyfriend is a PFC and only 17 and I guess that relationship affects my opinion on this subject. It just scares me to know that something like this could happen to him all because he wasn't properly supervised, although I don't think he'd ever go anywhere w/o his armor or weapon, but still.

This is very true. Keep in mind that we haven't had too many POWs taken captive in the Middle East, especially given the amount of time we've been there. I'm sure your boyfriend will be fine.:satisfied:

You're probably right...I just worry too much.

While it is the responsibility of his supervisor and ultimately his commander to know where he is at, it seems a bit ridiculous that he would have just strolled out into a warzone without taking precautions. There may be other unrealeased details, and probably are.
Analogy
It certainly is unfortunate if a kid gets run over by a car, but if his mother told him to not go in the road, and he just runs off anyways, you can say he could have prevented that incident himself had he taken precautions.
I do hope he comes back safely (which he probably will), and hope this turns out to be a positive thing by reminding other military personnel of the risks involved of being in a warzone.

If he comes back safely, it will be a first (unless he manages to escape, which is unlikely).
For those of you out there that are throwing this at his leadership entirely, know that there is some personal responsibility involved in the choices that we all make. If any of you enlist, you need to understand that your immediate supervisor is not going to have you on a leash. Once you get back from whatever your mission is, you'll likely have time to get yourself in trouble.
I gather from this particular case that PFC Bergdahl intentionally left the wire to meet up with his Afghani 'friends'. How he did so without anyone noticing isn't completely clear.
Suffice it to say that if you are on a small enough combat outpost or something similar, you may be able to slip out without someone noticing. It could be that he told his battle buddy he needed to go to the latrine and then slipped out. It's hard to say without all the facts. The bottom line is this: if you are in this situation, don't do anything this stupid. If you are a loved one, encourage your Servicemember to trust their chain of command and to execute their oath of enlistment to the best of their ability.
Your loved ones are in competent and capable hands, as I'm sure PFC Bergdahl was. Once you make the decision to completely circumvent your chain of command and do something you know to be wrong, you are at fault. Bottom line.

Fact is that if he makes it out alive it'll be a miracle. As for his age, I realize he's only a PFC, but he's old enough to think "hey maybe this isn't such a good idea and it's not exactly tourist season in iraq right now maybe it's not a good day for a stroll" before he just strolls on out past the gate without a weapon or armor. I hate to say it, but he was kinda asking for it.

Yeah saw it a few days ago, the video, and when I saw the thread again, I knew it had to go up. I'll keep my eyes on www.military.com and see if anything else pops up there.
