My grandfather got me into the old spaghetti westerns growing up.
"My Name Is Nobody" still remains one of my favorite movies today.

They are on the bargain rack of the local supermarket check out isles, next to the Time and Newsweek.
I love these movies as well. They are starting to come out more and more on DVD.

Great link to the old westerns, Ping! Man, what a flood of memories that little show brought back. It also answered a lot of questions that were in my mind about those old Heroes of mine. Great post, can't believe most are gone..
FeelingFroggy, That old movie, "My Name Is Nobody" or was it called, "A man Called Nobody" was one of my favorites. It's star was Henry Fonda, but can't recall the excellent co-star? I'd bet most never saw it and one should if you're a western fan..
Easy Brother,

Easy Brother,
Reddog... It's called "My Name Is Nobody". The co-star you speak of goes by the name of Terence Hill. It's a very rare film to find in any stores.
Below is a link to the theatrical trailor for the film. The quality at the beggining is poor but it gets better.

Okay Ping,
You got me on that one. Nothing like the Statler Brothers to start my morning and the memories of those old Westerns.
If you have caught the new Brad Paisley Song/Video "Waiting for a Woman" You'll see one of those Hero's in a Cameo Appearance.

Did someone invoke the name of the Statler Brothers?
"Countin' flowers on the wall,
that don't bother me at all.
Playing solitaire till dawn,
with a deck of 51.
Smokin' cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo,
Now don't tell me, I have nothing to do"
Sorry, just one of my favorites :D
Ha yes I do remember those Saturday afternoons as a kid watching Gene or Roy. Those were the good ones. There were so many old westerns which were good. Must of shaped my growing up, as I did the cowboy thing (rodeo) and worked a ranch for a while. Nothing like clean air and hard work to shape a young man's mind!!

BillyD, since most folks now-a-days play solitaire on the computer, how many do you think will catch the irony in these lyrics? :D

I remember the Statler Brothers. My parents used to listen to them when I was little. I found some of their stuff on Youtube the other day.

I miss the old westerns myself. I used to watch the John Wayne movies with my dad, when they were new. There were a lot of oldies I would watch on TV with him. Speaking of old westerns, remember the series, Gunsmoke?

Ditto that! Amanda Blake was a BABE!!!
You guys remember The Rifleman, Maverick, Johnny Yuma the Rebel, Wanted Dead or Alive, Have Gun Will Travel, Big Valley, Lawman, The Cisco Kid and Cheyene? There were others that I can't recall right now. Then there were the old serials like Hopalong Cassidy, Sergeant Preston of the Yukon and others. YEEEEHA cowboys! We used to call these "shoot-em-ups". They look kinda corny nowdays, but back then, those were some neat shows. Still fun to watch.

'What happened' to the old westerns is that they didn't fit 'the tenor of the times' and went into space: Look back on Hoppy, Gene and Roy (who I 'grew up on' - as much as I ever 'grew up') through the eyes of experience, and you'll see morality plays. Look back on the original "Star Trek" and it's the same morality play in space boots - then look around at the 'values' our kids have been taught for the generations schooled since the late 1960s.
The moral and ethical 'message' carried throughout the 'golden age' of oaters just isn't considered 'relevant' any more: The cowboy tipping his Stetson to the heroine and riding off into the sunset has no 'connection' to kids having sex at 11; standing up for principle and personal integrity - "High Noon" or "Shane" - is incomprehensible to the 'go along to get along', professional victim mentality - and the 'shrapnel as fashion statement, ink as identity' generation has little in common with the hero who could fight six 'black hats' without losing his.

Apparently, a new western will soon be out on the screens . 'Appaloosa' is set to be released in about two weeks. Haven't seen any previews....been awhile since a new western has competed at the box office. I think the last one (at least one that actually made any money) was "3:10 to Yuma". We'll see how 'Appaloosa' does.

I was excited when I saw the preview to "Appalossa". It seems to have a sort of old school flair to it!

I remember watching the re-runs (I am still in my late teenage years) of most of those shows on television. One of my favorite westerns was/is Maverick.:mp:
