We're currently in the process of making a website for our JROTC program.

If you don't mind, anyone that has the time, would you please send me some suggestions on what we can do to make a great website beyond the general stuff to put on websites.

Thank you

Cadet,

You have been informed that you need to change your screen name by your fellow cadet. Please contact Grunt via PM TODAY to change it.

In my opinion, and sorry I don't have anything to show for it as my unit is also developing it's website at the moment, a great unit website is one that is interactive and informative. Include .PDFs or other types of documents that cadets can download directly for convenience (like forms, manuals, regulations, etc.). Have bios of your instructors so that cadets are informed as to who their instructors are and what they have done. Maybe include bios of top cadets and leaders. Most definitely include your units COC and other pertinent AFJRTOC data. Lastly, make it interactive (pictures, audio, video, and even a forum if its available).

I hope this helps you out.

Thanks a lot, I never thought about using .PDF files on the pages. I sent the suggestions to the web designer and he thought they were pretty sweet.

So yeah, thanks again for the help.

My CAP Squadron has their own Myspace. I think its good because anyone (every user on Myspace) can stumble across it and read it..........

My units website hasn't been updated in a few years but it does have all of the ranks, ribbons, etc. that cadets can look at. As well as a full Microsoft Word document of our UMD. However it does not have an up to date CoC. It still has our ASI listed as the one we had two years and two ASI's ago. But if you would like I can PM the link to you.

Wow, thank you... A Facebook page might be a good idea to.

For a website it should be useful for your cadets, lots of downloads and utilities the can help the cadets. It should also have some information for prospective cadets.

My old unit has its own myspace...

It simple, easy, effective...You can also try out Xanga.com. It eliminates the hassle of having to due all this html, pay for the server, etc.

You can always put up a link to the D&C Manual. You can find the Army one at http://rotc.okstate.edu/pdf/FM%203-21.5%20Drill%20and%20Ceremony.pdf

I think to be effective you need to determine what it is used for. Is the website supposed going to be geared for "outsiders?" Do you want to be able to send someone to the page to find out more about your unit? Is the page going to be designed for current JROTC members? Both?

If it is the former, I would suggest leaving the D&C manual links, etc off of it. If it is designed just for current members, include information that they'll actually need access to.

Whatever you do, the biggest killer of websites is not having up to date information on the them. If the only CoC that you have is from 2004, don't put one up at all. Websites are nice, but only if you can keep them updated.

Good luck.

Even though out Battalion does not updated our website in ages, the last time I visited it consisted of important links, cadet chain of command, SAI and AI pictures and description, important dates, etc. Hope this helps!

The best thing to keep in mind is that the two main purposes for a Unit Website is to update your cadets and attract new ones.

My unit is also creating a website. Try to put a current events and uniform days / what uniform to wear. Another idea of mine is to put a blog on the website. The parents could blog about unit events and at the same time the parents could be as godd friends as some of the cadets. Just a few ideas for you, as soon as my unit's website is finished I will send you a link.

I personally use Office Live. I find it easy to use, the best part is that is is extremely eay to upload pictures and videos. To make a good website you should be well versed in HTML.
