I've decided to go for S-1 of my Battalion.
I've studied the part pretty well in the LET book, and I hope to get the job.:D

Any specific things you guys think I should know about the job?

Prepare to be bored to death by the paperwork and messing with JUMS.

Also, prepare to be frustrated, as JUMS has the tendency to freeze.

Buffalo hit it right on the head, people have some of the most boring jobs in the battalion, but they are necessary to keep the battalion running. Also, in staff there aren't many promotion opportunities so you are going to be stuck at whatever position you enter as. I just recently got assistant s-4 and the previous s-4 and A s-4 left a mess so be prepared for that too. Best of luck.

I see.

And I don't have to worry about becoming stuck at a rank. The reason I need to get into staff is that my battalion is really messed up.

I was only 1 out of 2 LET 1's last year that achieved the rank out C/SGT.
This entire year there has been no boards and I am still stuck at C/SGT while mid-year there are already LET 1's with the rank of C/SGT.

Hm...

Well, good luck in your BN Staff. I hope you make C/2LT. :)

Yes thank you. I just finished prepping my uniform.
And also, the rank is C/CPT in my school, not C/2LT.

Well ,the board was canceled for today, with no rescheduling date.:dontgetit:

A funny thing is that we were talking about one of the cadets who will probably be BC next year, and my AI said he would rather have me as BC than him. I was all like:D I'm still a LET 2.

I never really had a problem with JUMS.... It is easy to use, once you get the hang of it.

Ok, it was rescheduled for this Wednesday. I now have a study guide.
Hopefully you guys wont mind if I go over some of the questions, let me know what you think of the answers. It would help me alot. I'm going to try to answer them with no reference.

What are the duties and responsibilities of the position you are going for?

I am going for The Battalion S-1. This job entitles me to be the administrative assistant to the Battalion Commander. I will be using the JUMS system to keep track of all Battalion Activities and of course manage and maintain all cadet records.

If you weren't able to complete a task, what would be your next step?

First I would make sure that whatever it is im stuck on cannot be solved using any of my resources. Then my next step would be to, depending on the situation, go to either the BC or BXO, or one of the AI's.

How would you utilize the chain of command in order to relay a message?
Any help on this question would be appreciated.

Name several ways in which you can coordinate with your Battalion Executive Officer in order to complete a task
This one too :/

About as good an answer you can give to a question like that, or any of the variations of it which are common with job interviews (how would you handle this problem...etc)

Happens to be the right answer too. Something should only be moved up the chain if you know it's something that you can't accomplish yourself.

And there should be very few things in life you can't accomplish on your own with proper motivation?

What exactly does your board mean by this question? I have several answer's but they aren't all gonna work, to me they are asking more than one question and also not considering every circumstance.

How would you utilize the chain of command in order to relay a message?

This is easy just go to your C/Battalion XO. The C/Battalion XO's job is to handle all C/Staff problems and to relay the C/Staff's opinion's, suggestion and other problem's to your SAI.

Duty Description: The XO serves as second in command of the battalion.
He/she is the principal assistant to the CO. The XO directs, coordinates and supervises the activities of the staff sections.

Sorry this post is so long, I tried to condense it but I think you really need to get all the informaton and not just the appetizer (you need the whole meal).

I honestly have no idea. Thats the question as read on the paper.

But Thanks. I really appreciate it. Plus it helped.

Well your welcome. I personally think the question is horribly worded. The way it is worded makes it seem like the board is asking several question's at once. I hope you don't trip on that question. Good Luck, make sure to be seated at Position of Attention while sitting (heel's together with 45 degree ankle between them, palms face down on your knee's and your head looking straight forward look behind the board member's (in your direct line of view) head when she/he is asking a question and looking them in the eye when you answer the question.

No worrier's your going to get the position (I have faith in you) and if you don't they must be messed up in the head!!!!

I was actually thinking of going for S-3 as well. But I don't know if I should put myself out there going for S-1 and S-3.

You know I want to know if its the same for all other schools, but theres this group(Of JROTC friends) that hangs out all the time and they have this whole little thing planned out for staff. Like they all say how all the positions are secured for next year, and how so-and-so is going to be in a certain position.

It annoys me how sure they are, and I personally think some of them aren't suited for staff at all. The major thing is that the talk can be rather intimidating, as one of my friends(also running for staff,S-5) is kind of nervous due to that.

Well that happens in every unit across the country. The thing is though it is not cadet's who pick (they aren't supposed to) your position it is your SAI an AI. Your SAI and AI will see how squared away you are and that you really know how to do the job and they will give you the position. Don't worry if you don't get it this time it's okay, who knows they might give you another position or just wait for the year to pass so that the next year you can really be "rewarded".

Be patient, study, and I'm sure you'll do fine.

Yup, that group is mostly the Battalion CO, the c/CSM, and the Battalion XO for both the current year and the next. This group also includes the AI, SAI and possibly the staff for this year. Luckily I didn't need to go through the board, the job was kind of just given to me. My AI/SAI thought it would be cute having the Color Guard team being on staff, even the one freshman (not that he does any work.)

Thanks for all the help guys. I did great. I sat at attention, spoke properly, and had eye contact at all time. I made sure my uniform was squared away and everything. I decided to go for S-1. But luckily on of the questions was would I like it if I got the S-3 position. So I made my point clear on that. So anything is possible at this point. Apparently I'll find out this Friday at our Military Ball.

One funny thing though. They had asked me what JUMS stood for. I had no clue. But I recall one of the other cadets saying it outside, and I remembered and got the question right. Apparently that was in my short-term memory I can't recall what it is now.:p Someone help me out?

I got it! I just came from the Military Ball and I was awarded the position of S-3! Probably the biggest rank jump. From a C/SGT to C/CPT. I was suppose to get C/Major, but they decided to have the staff earn their ranks the next year, which I can easily do. Thanks you to everyone who believed in me!

I was in JROTC when JUMS was fielded, replacing Joint JUISS (JJUISS). Being our program's tech guy, guess who got to read all the manuals and prep the organization's data for conversion from one program to the other. I ended up having both JJUISS and JUMS installed on a "spare" system at home, working out the little kinks that we had in the conversion (I had made some, um, "alterations" to the JJUISS data files, so things didn't go as smoothly as I'd hoped).

Haha, thats exactly what was thinking. If I were a C/MAJ that would have been 10 ranks. Probably the biggest jump on record in my Battalion.
