My son won the Marine Corps NROTC scholarship, but now he has the matter of food and shelter to attend to. When he was presenting the deal to us he somehow neglected to mention that rather important detail. What are some options? I really hate to think of him starting out, even with a guaranteed paycheck, some $30,000+ in debt. Grants? Schools that waive or discount the room and board? Other scholarships?

According to the NROTC Scholarship website, he will get a monthly stipend for susistance.

As for housing, I had several classmates who had part time jobs to cover rent. I would also compare the prices of on campus housing vs. apartments in the area. You might be suprised by the cost comparisons.
Congrats to your son on being selected for the scholarship, that is a great accomplishment.

The stipend is helpful, but it's not enough to cover a meal ticket and especially housing. Looking at options. Any schools that offer a waiver or scholarships? We're getting down to the wire. Now it's up to him. I just want to get this obstacle out of the way.
By the way, thanks for the kind words. Now it's up to him.

There are other non-military scholarships that are sometimes easy to get if you give a decent amount of work because nobody bothers to try and get them. Usually these small ones aren't much but they do help. Congratulations by the way.
