I am a freshman and of course a LET 1 in AJROTC.
During the first quarter I was promoted to C/SSG
Everyone thanks that is weird
I was just wondering why is that weird

Many programs don't see promotion rates like that. Most programs from my hometown area didn't promote LET-1's past c/CPL, and the way it sounds most schools don't either. A promotion to c/SSG in the first quarter of the year is just FUBAR.

If success is measured by the size of the insignia that you finish the program with, sounds to me that I was not successful since I only had 1 lozenge while another one of my buddies had 2. It's not the rank that makes you memorable, it's what you do while you have it that makes you such. My old SAI still asks me to come in and help the program out because of what I did as a cadet.

There's a reason I didn't put forth the effort to pin on stripes until the time I did, even though I had been promotable for several months before. I waited until I felt I was ready, and have to constantly defend myself to both seniors and subordinates because of that decision. I constantly argue that waivers are supposed to be the exception, not the rule. Sadly, today's Army has turned into quantity versus quality. I watch PFC's fresh from AIT get waivered to SPC, because they hit their 18-month mark of time in service. I watch Soldiers be presented to the promotion board, WHO DON'T WANT TO BE THERE, simply because they gained eligibility to be there in the Secondary Zone (which equates to appearing with a waiver, and should you get promoted, it's with a waiver until you it the Primary Zone). I got told by one of those SPC's that the ONLY REASON I put forth the effort to get promoted was because I didn't want to be outranked by one of a large group of SPC's in my shop. I constantly get told by seniors and subordinates that I should've cheated my way to get the points I needed to get promoted, and that it's my fault that I am not yet a SGT.

I wasn't saying it like that, Iwas saying he is dedicated and wants to succeed look at his stripes. He wants to do good and learning comes from that.

While each program does have the ability to set it's own promotion criteria (points, time-in-rank, merit/demerit systems), it does seem odd for a Cadet to be promoted so quickly. As a LET 1, it's unlikely that this cadet is already in a leadership position (which would warrant a promotion, depending on the system used) or has proven himself to be exceptional.

I've never felt that having set restrictions on maximum ranks based on LET level are a good idea, I feel they have a way of taking away some of the motivation for the Cadets to work hard to try and earn their rank once they max out for the year.

To me JROTC is really dumb(my unit and my unit only) the leaders in my unit care more about a stupid trpphy then peoples feelings. You have to learn a trophy will break and it may seem good in the short while but making a Cadet happy will last forever you may not be rembered as a great BNCO,XO,CO or BNSGM. But helping and serving will make you remebered as a great leader who cared about teh cadets under him/her instead of a trophy. Remeber that.
