What are your plans after High School? I am going to MCRDPI and hopefully will graduate. I will then go to SOI and then onto Basic Force Reconasssince training. I'll go to the fleet and be deployed(Hopefully). I want to have a Career in the Marine Corps for as long as they let me stay in(I want to be a Drill Instructor and Recruiter)and I want to hopefully retire as a Sergeant Major(or a officer, if God tell's me to get a Comission). If for some reason I can't re-enlist I will return to wokr for Kroger as a Manager or go to School. What are your plans?

My plans, go to college (hopefully with a NROTC scholarship Marine option.) Go to OCS, and get a commision as a Second Lieutenant in USMC Infantry. If I cannot recieve a scholarship and can't afford to go to college, I will enlist and try to go to school via enlisted program, but if I am happy being enlisted I will naturally stay. Don't know if I will make a career out of the military, but I feel I need to serve my country.

Well that's good. Who doesn't want to be on of "The Few, The Proud, The Marines", or a Airmen,Soldier,Sailor or Cost Guardsmen. Take your pick.

Umm... look around the forum. There's plenty of people who are serving/have served and didn't want to be a Marine.

I want to get flying colors in school (like I already have now :p), graduate high school, get into UC Berkeley on NROTC scholarship, get a Master's in Computer Science, get a commission (through NROTC) in the Navy as a SWO, spend some time in the fleet, work my way up, maybe become CO of my very own vessel, then by some outrageous luck be called for astronaut duty, serve as an astronaut for a number of years, then STILL be young enough to serve as the President of the United States, and retire comfortable, rich, and, having served my country, content.
Or I might just go through college normally (on a smart-guy's scholarship hehe) and go through Navy OCS and try to get commissioned and be a Navy Information Warfare Officer or Naval Intelligence Officer (high hopes!) and then be on loan to the Air Force and serve in Area 51 and then aliens will come they will be almost unstoppable but then I find out how to kill them and then the world fights off the alien invasion and then people nominate me for President of the United States and I am elected and I am not assasinated or impeached or any of that bad stuff.
Hey! Stop sneering! A guy can dream, can't he? :D

Exterminate the liberals lol just kidding just kidding.
Oh and on a more serious note, if the Navy isn't for me, then I might want to join my local police force. I'm kind of fussy about rules and I think being a copper would be a good career :D.
Besides, not that it matters, but they get paid a lot more that the Armed Forces do! Unfortunate but true.
City cops near me get paid 85K a year ENTRY LEVEL and can get up to 103K a year.

I'm seeking a commission through a military academy, most notably the Army via the United States Military Academy at West Point. If not, maybe the Naval Academy and commission with the Marine Corps. My backup is The Citadel, where I will compete for ROTC scholarships and go with whoever gives me the best deal.

1. United States Naval Academy - Marine Officer
2. Naval ROTC - Marine Officer
3. College, then OCS - Marine Officer
4. Enlist, and try step one again.

Or you can do the MECEP program when you make SGT(E-5) or SSG(E-6) and go to any college with NROTC for free. It is hard to get into the USNA when you are enlisted first. Someone really want's to be a mustang!!!

Attend college in northern New Jersey or NYC and obtain a Bachelors in some computer-related field (computer information systems, information science, etc.). While going to college, participate in Army ROTC on a GRFD or DedARNG scholarship, and (if I'm not medically DQ'd) be commissioned as an Army National Guard officer. Local units in the area I'll be living in range from infantry and cavalry to armor and aviation, so I'll have a good selection (depending on what's available).
Regardless of whether or not I get into the Army, I want to later attend college again to obtain a Masters degree (computer or law-ish related), and become a police officer with the Port Authority Police Department of NY & NJ. (If anyone's seen the World Trade Center movie with Nicholas Cage, they portrayed a group of PAPD officers.) The PAPD is one of the highest paying LEA's in the northwest (88k after 5 years, not including promotions or overtime), and I prefer their mission / duty location over "normal" police departments.
Lastly, as soon as I get to New Jersey for college (I'll be living with family), I'm going to join their town's volunteer fire department. By the time I'm ready to retire, I'll have a huge pension from the PAPD, a good chunk from being in the ARNG (again, if I'm not medically PDQ'd), and a pension from being a volunteer firefighter. Woohoo!

I'm loving the plan man! Either way you go there it sounds like you're going to be set if all goes well. Let's just keep hoping you don't get that official DQ so you can keep all of your options on the table when it's time to decide.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. I've decided the only academy I would not go to is the Merchant Marine Academy. All the academies (even the Merchant Marines) get you to the same place, a commission in that service and an amount of time you must spend in service. It's just a question of where you want to be after schooling and what you want your background to say, that's it.

Uh, the USCGA is a military academy. Just because the USCG doesn't fall under the DoD doesn't mean it's not the military.

I realize my days as a Cadet were well over 3 years ago, my last day in high school about roughly 2 and 1/2 years, but I'd like to give a little warning to ya'll if I may.
The goals most of you have are good, just make sure you don't screw up on the way there. I had planned to enlist in the USMC just as soon as I had finished high school. Things didn't quite work out that way though. The summer between my junior and senior year (several month's after my father had passed) I found myself doing a lot of things that I shouldn't have been. Aside from those things, by a large part mostly illegal, when I went back to school I started slacking in class (the few I went to and didn't skip.)
Before we even made it into the next semester I had become a temporary ward of the sheriff and the county. Not only did I have to spend the 4 months that compose the best time of people's Senior years with people much older than myself in one of the worst places this side of the Rockies, but it came with 3 years probation (which I'll have successfully completed come the end of March.)
So even once I was done with my sentence, and had manged to acquire a GED (which isn't as good as a diploma, no matter what people say) I was still unable to enlist (due to probation.) Now when my probation runs up, I would be able to enlist, but in all this excess time I've had off I managed to develop a medical disqualification (which can be fixed for a hefty sum I can't come up with.)
To cut a long story short, this is just my bit of advice. None of you want to do what I did, so please use that as a good example of what not to do.
Go to class, graduate, and move on to what you want to do. Don't go out and start causing trouble and doing things that at the time seem more fun (because their really hazardous down the road.)
If anyone has any questions feel free to ask me. I may have alluded to some things, but I'm not going to air my dirty laundry publicly. Some of this stuff is likely to find it's way around to you, and if I can help someone avoid the road I took, I'd be more than happy to help.

Actually the USCGA is one of the harder academies to get in. They accept a very small portion of those who apply. I believe there are only 800 cadets there opposed to the over 4,000 at West Point. The USCG also has the highest requirements to join in terms of the ASVAB (45-50 min. I believe, most other branch minimums are 30ish). Just because you don't need a nomination, doesn't mean it's easy (are you positive, you don't need a nomination?).

Yes, here you go:
Unlike the other service academies, admission to the Coast Guard Academy is solely based upon merit and does not require a congressional nomination.

It makes sense though, if you're friends with a congressman or whatever, it would increase your chances of getting in. Patronage, I believe it's called, cannot be carried out as easily.

almost exactly the same as my friend TruBlu here except my choice after USMA would be NGCSU covered by hopefully an ROTC scholarship and other various scholarships like HOPE and school offered ones, after which I would branch Infantry and try out for the Rangers/Special Forces and maybe if by some miracle maybe end up making it into CAG, and then would be USNA to try out for SEALs or be a Marine officer...

Speaking of Congressman, I have a meeting with my Senator this month and am planning a meeting with the former Under Secretary for Border and Transportation Security and Director of the DEA. I also just recently met and talked to my state's Lieutenant Governor.

Just because you don't go to college right out of high school doesn't mean you won't ever go. Here I am getting close to 4 years after I graduated, and I am finally getting myself enrolled. I'll be 24/25 when I get my Associates Degree, but it doesn't matter what age you get it.

Yes it is but you have to make it first. I have re-arrranged my priorities a whole lot. I have calmed down on wanting to be Rick Recon Drill Instructor Recruiter Marine. I have cooled it and I am just focusing on Graduating High School and earing the title of UNITED STATES MARINE. Take it day by day step by step, plan but don't get ahead of yourself. I don't think it's quite wise to be giving medical advice to someone when you're not a licensed medical professional - let alone, not even knowing the person's medical history.
Given I'm not a medical professional, either - and I'm not too familiar with the poster's conditions - you can end up with some serious medical problems if you take things into your own hands (or God forbid, utilize the advice of an unkown person on the internet) and simply quit doing something medically-wise without consulting or being directed to do so by your doctor.
For safety's sake, keep thoughts like those to yourself.

Well, here are my goals and the path I went down. Keep in mind some goals take quite a while to reach. In my case becoming a lawyer requires 7 years of post secondary education. I graduated HS in 2004 and finished my bachelor's degree in 2007. Right now I am in my second semester of law school. Depending on how things work out I am either going to a District Attorney's office or a criminal defense firm in the summer of 2011.
