| 1817: | Florida Indians were attacked by white settlers, retaliating for Indian raids against them. This began the First Seminole War. |
| 1943: | U.S. Marines landed on Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands, one of the bloodier campaigns waged by American forces against the Japanese in the Pacific. |
| 1962: | President Kennedy lifted the U.S. naval blockade of Cuba, having been assured by Soviet Premier N.S. Khrushev that all Soviet missiles would be removed within 30 days. Khrushev delivered, an action which ultimately led to his downfall. |
| 1965: | 240 American troops were killed in fighting in the Iadrang Valley of South Vietnam. |

| Military veterans need to be aware of the hazard that mesothelioma poses. Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive cancer known only to be caused by asbestos exposure. Asbestos exposure was common aboard naval vessels and other within other military installations. Options for mesothelioma treatment are limited but technology and therapies are emerging that can extend life and promote the discovery of a cure. |
